Makes good sense. Thanks for clarifying. I need to do this mod soon and see what kind of difference it makes in my 99 F-350, hoping it quiets her down a bit sounds like a can of marbles shaking around at idle. I'd love to hear a nice 4 or 5" straight pipe over what I have any day.
Take your truck to a transmission shop. You are probably due for a new torque converter.
When at idle, lots of racket....give it some fuel it goes away. Torque Converter.
Below is a link to my "Hutch/Harpoon" mod story. It is one of the best things I have done for my truck since buying it. The engine runs much more smooth (quieter at idle and speed) due to removing the air getting into the fuel system. Also, I can get about 32 gallons into my 26 gallon factory tank and it does not over fill and poor all over the side of the truck anymore.
Cutting the vent and fill tubes (Harpoon) drastically cuts down on the foaming that causes you to stand there and trickle the fuel in earlier in your fill-up.

I did it on the Excursion and our F-250. I didn't notice as much of a gain on the Ex compared to the F-250. The F-250's needle doesn't move off full till after driving 120 miles......
Not to say it didn't help at all, but there was a much bigger gain doing the Harpoon mod on the F-250 in my experience.....
Edit: but at least that diesel "back atcha" splash stopped on both vehicles
