and it may just stir up a hornets nest. Today I spoke with the service manager of an independent Diesel shop. Of the three most recent Powerstroke engines he feels that (once bullet-proofed) the 6.0L is the best. He felt the 6.7 was OK but had disdain for the 6.4.

He went on to say that he also liked both the Cummings and Duramax engines. When pushed he actually placed the Powerstroke last.

I don't believe he was grinding any axes, just relating his experience with servicing them.

Your thread title sums it up.

He went on to say that he also liked both the Cummings and Duramax engines.
If he in fact pronounced it as "Cummings", he's lost a lot of credibility.

The 6.0 and 6.4 issues might make it very hard to get past the fact that the 6.7 is a pretty good motor. I can understand how an independent Service Mgr that's been around a few years would rate them as he did.

The 6.7 is a marvel of modern engineering. But it's complexity kind of scares me. And the cost to fix it if it breaks is one of the reasons I'm sticking with my V-10 for now.

Could not have said it better.
When I bought my used dually I went for the V10.
Yeah a diesel would get better millage and have better low end torque,, But I did not want to keep 10K set aside for repairs/service work.
The V10 is no modern marvel, just old fashioned cubic inches converting gas/air too power, any shade tree can work on it.

Like I said before, I gave up millage and low end to gain reliability and piece of mind,

If you look below you will see I am currently driving a V10. But it appears that my next tow buggy will be (out of what's available) a diesel, hence my search for info.

Personally I put the 6.7L on top out of all the Ford diesels. Extremely well engineered and built engine. Some quirks with emissions, but similar issues plague the Duramax and Cummins motors. I've been so impressed that I skipped the 6.0L and 6.4L for it, and waited for the 15's when they updated some key components (turbo, HPFP, internals, transmission, etc) to make it king of the road.

Even bulletproofed, the 6.0L is showing more issues as they age. So many components have had to be re-engineered in order to make it last, and even that's not a guarantee.

The 6.4L was just an atrocity. Take all the emissions stuff off and you can make some serious power, but reliability and longevity just still elude that motor.

The 7.3L goes forever, but is a constant nickel-and-dime motor. Especially now that most on the road have hundreds of thousands of miles on them. Plus they hate the cold, hate altitude... hate everything except warm temps and flat land and a trailer behind them. What do they love? They love to leak and burn oil.

Having messed around extensively with the 7.3L and HEUI, I'm just no longer a fan of the severely outdated technology. The 6.0L should have been common rail rather than HEUI, but that's Ford's mistake they'll keep having to suck up for a long time.

As for the others.... the Duramax used to be the king of the hill in terms of advanced diesel technology, power, smoothness, etc. The 6.7L PSD put the Duramax in it's place. Both are now very similar (especially the 15 Super Duty now that they got rid of the single-sequential turbo), but the Ford wins overall with the rest of the truck. GM still makes cheap interiors and uncomfortable seats, and insufficient IFS front ends that just don't handle the abuse.

The Cummins just lags in terms of power. They make great peak power early, but fall off just as quickly. The quality of the rest of the truck.... well..... meh. Don't think I have to go into detail there.

Anyway, that's this man's opinion. My order best to worst would be 6.7L, 7.3L, 6.0L, horse biscuits, rat turds, leeches, Chelsea Clinton's face, 6.4L.

From what I have read the 6.7 is the way to go for sure if you have the means.

My first thought was the old saying of "Opinions are like butt holes, everybody has one".
I did clean that up just a little.

When I had my egr deleted and had studs done last year the mechanic, ford dealership, said that he always swore he would never buy a 6.0 when they came out and had sworn by the 7.3. He said now he wouldn't buy any ford other than a 6.0.
7.3's while being strong are becoming dated and have weaker transmissions.
6.4's, where do you start. Said he has worked on more 6.4's than 6.0's, 7.3's and 6.7's
6.7, extremely powerful but extremely expensive to repair, especially if you get a little water through the water separator. I want to say a teaspoon will knock out the whole system.
He said the 6.0 once bulletproofed is a great engine. The key is maintenance.
I don't know anything about the duramax or cummins

Personally I think the 6.7 is a success. Ford did well on this design, get rid of the emissions crap and you have a reliable drivetrain. If you are worried about water in the fuel then buy a aftermarket fuel filter, your warranty is gone anyway when you delete so might as well make the whole system bomb proof. The 6.7 is doing so well that you might start seeing a decline in demand for the 7.3, some of those people are asking way too much money for their 7.3's.

I just stumbled on this older post that I started, so allow me to update: I went with a 2014 6.7. With fingers crossed ...

If I had to choose a psd I would go with the 6.7 as well. I have spent enough time broken down and in the shop talking to their technicians to know that I will never own anything built by navistar. Congrats on the new truck and hope it works out for you

Quite a gamble buying a engine made by international. Kinda like those farm trucks you see rusting in the corner of a field where they died 30 years ago. Oh wait those are mostly internationals too at least in my neck of the woods.
