AOD no shift

My 83 flareside with 302 2wd and AOD will not come out of first. I am finishing a full restoration and finally got to drive it. It shifted when I took it out. The fluid level is correct, the indicator has it in drive and I shift until I get to that position. I have adjusted the kick down, but that shouldn't affect this. Any ideas? I bring it up in speed and let off of the gas and it will not shift to second.

Double check the kick down adjustment.

You do not have a "kick down" on an AOD. It is a Throttle Valve linkage or cable. Adjustment is critical to up and down shifting. You can ruin your trans in just a few miles without proper adjustment.

Mulitple vids on the subject here:

Did you change the carburetor or maybe rebuilt the carb that was on it? If you changed anything regarding the carb linkage you need to verify the TV linkage
adjustment. The AOD does not have a kick down rod.

OK, I have a solid rod that is attached to the carb and goes down to the transmission. What trans is this then? I will review the adjustment. Thanks

The solid rod you mention can either be a kick down rod on a 3 speed C4 of C6 auto
transmission. The AOD from 1981-1985 used a very similar rod for the TV adjustment.

The AOD is a 4 speed auto transmission and is very different than a C4 or C6.

Look at the transmission indicator on the steering column. If it has D-2-1 it is a
C4 or C6. The AOD will have a D in a white circle and 3-1. The data plate on the
door will have a T code for an AOD transimission.

Mine has the white D for Overdrive. The rod is original equipment for the truck.

Like the others have said, adjustment of the rod is critical, to an AOD's longevity.

Ok you have an AOD. I would see if the rod is adjusted properly as this definely effects the shifting of an AOD trans. As mentioned by 85e150six4mtod, you can ruin an AOD very quickly if the rod is not in proper adjustment.

If you are not sure about the adjustment, you should get a transmission shop to
check it for you.

Other links for AOD adjustments. Ones with the rod are towards the end:
