Which year did Ford start using the electronic speed sensors in the C6 transmission? I'd like to use an electronic sensor that I could bolt right into the cable mounting spot so that I can switch my speedo over to electronic with an Arduino or Teensy microcontroller. Snce I'm already going to use the microcontroller for numerous other things on the van, I might as well add the speedo to it for odometer purposes at least.
I've still been looking into this and by visual accounts only it looks like the VSS from the E4OD would fit in the C6. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I'm sure I would probably have to change the gear on the end of the VSS or change it to a square like the cable is, but that is minor in my opinion.
The VSS from any C6 should work OK. Say from a 1989 F-series with a C6 but I would think one from any of the auto and maybe even a standard would work.
The speedometer were cable driven in 89 E-series and F-series but the plug on top of the sensor sent speed information to the ECM Computer.
Later on the same VSS sensor was used for the PSOM type speedometer and to send information to the PCM Computer in the 1992 to 1997 F53 chassis.
The 1994 F53 I have uses that same VSS sensor for the speedometer and the PCM Computer. They just do not use the part the cable goes into and that hole is plugged.

I think I'm a little confused, are you saying that particular VSS would, or would not, work in the C6? I'm hoping to find one that I can plug into the hole that currently has the speedo cable in it.
It is the same sensor that was used in the C6 in 1989 and also used for the F53 with the PSOM type speedometer.
Yes it should work for you.
Note that the output from the sensor is not the same that of the rear end VSS/ABS sensor puts out. When this sensor is used with the PSOM and the PSOM does no conversion to the speed signal. The speed signal also bypasses the PSOM on its way to the Speed Control and the PCM Computer.
Thanks! I'm not worried about it's signal output, I'll convert it as I need to for the odometer/speedometer project. I just needed a mechanically "tried-n-true" VSS replacement for the speedo cable.
