As far as the head gaskets go, I'm at 130k on the factory gaskets without studs. It is all stock and I have everything else done. Last year before the new oil cooler I saw a 35 or so degree spread once (ECT 212/EOT 247)going up a long grade but reduced that on the way back by just slowing down. I tow about 13k so I expect mine to run a little on the hot side on long climbs. The key is to watch the EOT/ECT and let off of it when you need to.

Mine has 180k on it no studs according to oasis report when i bought it nothing had ever been apart. Just pulled out TT from MI thru the mountains to NC. No issues at all. I was a little nervous opening the hood to checks things out as I've never pulled anything thru the mountains and never this far was 596 miles. But everything dry as a bone. So studs are not essential. I also will not year apart a engine that's had no issues with the head gaskets just because. If and when they let go i'll stud it.

If you didn't hear your fan come on, that could be the problem. When I tow 6000 lb over a 2000 ft mountain, it kicks on during the climb. It is loud! I also can see fan speed on Torque. It goes from about 400 to 2000rpm.

I watch my fan speed on Torque also. I posted my temps from my long trip last year. My ECT stayed around 210 cycling regularly with the fan, and my EOT did run about 230 on flat ground. I'm anxious to see what they will be this year with the new oil cooler. Right now I see about a 6-8 degree difference (ECT 192/EOT 198) running without a trailer.

I just read an article in a diesel truck mag and they did a bullet proof build on a 6.0. They list all the upgrade parts and the oil cooler was a factory FoMoCo cooler but the newer version. It must be good (and cheaper than BPD)

I just put a new Ford cooler in mine. I wish I had taken a picture of the pile of oil coolers behind his shop. He had a pallet or two full.

And works perfectly fine for most people. If original coolers make it 100k with indifferent coolant maintenance, then a good flush and ELC should make the second one last 200k, if not indefinately.
