ok so i have a 1978 f150 400 4x4 auto and have been having trouble with the charging for years. something is draining battery overnight. if u cut switch on and watch amp guage it twitchs drops about a half to a quater of an amp kind of like a heartbeat so to speak lol have no clue if its a ground or wire arch something shorted i need some help any ideas????? has new alt. reg. ign switch cant figure it out!!
Disconnect the positive battery cable and put a test light between the cable and battery terminal. With everything turn off including the dome light, is the test light on? If it is you have a drain somewhere. Start troubleshooting by removing one fuse at a time from the fuse panel. Keep going until the light goes out. That will be the circuit that you need to look at. If the light stays on, disconnect the alternator. I know you replaced it, but it wouldn't be the first time a new (rebuilt) alternator was bad out of the box.
Also, if you have a late model radio, be sure to kill the constant power to it.
no light when testing post to cable with switch off.....main problem is the fuseable link in harness going from alt. to starter siylinoid keeps blowing changed alt and reg several diff times.....use to blow every single time u start up truck. now only blows when u turn lights on and blower motor. and when no loads on the guage is slightly juming...
