Engine Install question
I have been searching for a thread with my issue. So I have a 2003 Ford Expedition with a 4.6. So to the problem at hand. I pulled the engine sometime ago to replace the heads and minor rebuild. So I have the engine put back together, I am having all kinds of issue getting the engine installed. I pulled it though the top. I have changed out engines in Chevys and dodges but this is my first ford and it's kicking my a$$.
I have the torque converter installed on the engine and the mounts are on the truck. It's really tight, it seems that for me to get the engine in there I have to pull the mounts. But then it's to tight to install the mounts.
install the torque converter in the transmission first and MAKE SURE you have it seated all the way into the pump.
when you get the motor installed, you should have to pull the Torque Converter forward about 1/8" or so to fully seat into the flex plate. if not, pull the engine back out and work on getting the TC fully seated.
if you haven't forced the issue, the pump might be OK, but if not you'll be pulling the trans shortly after. at this point, I'd be pulling the torque converter seal and replacing that before reinstalling the torque converter to assure that the seal wasn't damage during the failed motor install attempts.
leaving the torque converter attached to the flex plate is a bad idea. I know some do it, and with success, but that trick only works if the engine is never rotated while it is out. but if you screw it up you end up welding the front pump to itself.
I hope I haven't screwed it up. It's been along time since I pulled an engine. That's what I get for following one of those manuals it doesn't clearly state to pull the TC. anyways I'm an idiot holding the bag, thanks for y'all's help!
