Quick 6.8 Y-pipe question

I'm going to do the Banks headers on my rig (in 15 years when I have the money) eventually but in the mean time I want to get rid of that damn OEM "Y"-pipe. Is there a special reason to get the kit from 5star and have it welded in or can I just get a muffler shop to fab me one up? Is it a cost thing or a quality thing?

As mentioned in other threads, most muffler shops only have the ability to do "crush bends". Any shop that you find that can do mandrel bends as well as make the joint properly, is going to charge you a lot more than 100 bucks to make the pipe. Not to mention labor to install.

Ah, so it is a cost AND quality issue. Well looks like I'm ordering mine soon then Looked at mine while doing my Hellwig install the other day and that thing is stupid, who engineered that thing?!?

I was getting some bolts torched out by a muffler shop and the guy doing it started going off on that stupid Ford design.

He said there is a flowmaster Y pipe that he could make work without much effort. He also suggested a high flow cat and muffler.

According to him it would be a very noticeable power feel and the mpg should be better.

He quoted me $350 for the parts and labour for the Y pipe only.

As soon as they mention high flow cat... Run. There is NO SUCH ANIMAL. And the "Flowmaster" y-pipe is another good laugh.

He showed me the Y pipe and it didn't look cheaply assembled to my eyes. It's hard to compare to the 5star or ebay options out there but I doubt the build quality of those Y pipes compared to the flowmaster would be significant.

I've never been a huge fan of "high flow cat" but I do know first hand what a difference it made in a couple of the cars I've removed them from so I guess I'm on the fence about that one.

Flowmaster the brand/company does not make a y-pipe for the 5.4/6.8L.

As to the cat, on a modern vehicle, if the cat is functioning properly, there really is little to no improvement/change to be made other than sound and maybe the butt-dyno.

I am thinking about the Y pipe for my next mod. My concern is the flutter. Maybe I should ask In the "I just bought an EX and I have a stupid question" but what exactly is flutter. Is it really loud in the truck? Does the Y pipe still work well with stock exhaust? Do I also need the 5 Star Tune to ge the most benefit of the Y pipe?

NSMU- do you have the ramhorn style piping underneath? When my truck had that style I noticed a tinging on the piping. Also the y pipe can be factored into the tune but is not necessary. I believe they are recommended and sold together though.

Archion- the flowmaster is a premade Y section, they would have to build the rest. You are right about the High flow cat debate as well.

Apoc- sounds like you should order some tunes and the pipe at the same time.

Bently, no idea on Ramhorn piping but I do have a lot of the tinging when I shut off the truck... Does that mean anything?

I think I'm going to hold off on the tunes. I want to save up for a better tuner and hand my SCT down to someone on here when I do (possibly someone in Alaska ) so I'd rather not waste the money on tunes right now.

Once I was underneath an Econoline Cutaway, V10-2V, I swear that Y pipe would fit an Excursion and it didn't have the reduced pipe diameter like our trucks have (restrictive Y). Sadly I was never able to confirm. Does anyone here have access to an Econoline Cutaway to inspect?
