So 85 ranger with 2.3l and A4ld. I can manually shift to get first and 2nd. When i look at the vaccume diagram it shows these 2 blocks on the tranny, one box is connected to the next with a vac line. The other box has 2 lines, one goes to the main vaccume block on the intake and the other T's into a small capped off canister and the egr. I can only find one place for a vac line and its on the pasgr side of the tranny... Where is the block that the egr line connects too located? Its not on the tranny as far as i can tell. Appreciate any help and i hope my explanation here isnt too confusing.
Also if it helps.. The lil boxes in the diagram are labled SOL V and say egr above them, but the egr is in another location. I just want to kno where these boxes are located. Tranny shift well and doesnt slip or anything.
The 85 has a 'tree' on the top of the manifold on 2.3 Limas. There is a vacuum line that goes over to the passenger side underneath the plastic cover. It feeds the two solenoids that control the EGR valve. The solenoids allow vacuum to the EGR diaphragm, and then vent the vacuum as commanded by the computer.
The modulator is mounted on the rear (I think) of the A4LD, passenger side. It would have a vacuum line that went directly up to the intake manifold.(I have a manual so no modulator). The A* I worked on had a metal line clipped to the transmission, with rubber 'connectors' at the modulator and the vacuum supply at the other end.
A disconnected modulator would generally keep the transmission in lower gears longer than was 'comfortable' as it thinks the throttle is wide open - no vacuum == wide open throttle - so would prevent upshift due to throttle demand. If you can accelerate strongly, and then ease back on the gas pedal, you should be able to 'force' an almost immediate upshift if the modulator is working. If it stays in the lower gears, the modulator may be bad(generally punctured diaphragm leading to smoking exhaust from burned trans fluid), or the vacuum source missing, or the governor not working...
