Valve train it is! The worst bad luck I've ever had. Bought the truck, drove it 300km, and already it's going to cost me a fortune in repairs.

Verdict is in. Not a good news! Finally the problem was a bad lifter, caused damage to the cam lobe, so they need to get the motor out and fix all that, i will get a final price on sunday, i'm thinking no cheaper than 6000$' i need a cam, gasket kit, ect... Might as well get them to put arp head studs while they are at it.

First diesel and really i'm not sure if want to keep it now, left a bad taste in my mouth. What's your opinions? Trade for a gas truck? I really don't want to have to pay for another bad luck in the near future. Should've never bought a 6.4L

No doubt your not too happy right now, I wouldn't be either.

I won't tell you what to do, but I will say that impulsive and emotional decisions usually cost you, when it comes to vehicles, so don't fly off the handle and do something impulsive before you calm down and think things through.

If it was me, I'd keep driving it. Sure it cost a pile of cash, but trading vehicles off wastes a ton of cash too.

Ford is going to charge the most money. I would try to find a different mechanic. You also might want to look at a stage 1 cam.

Some people feel the steepness of the ford cam lob cause this failure.

That really sucks and am sorry to hear about it, I just dodged a major bullet on my 6.0L a couple of weeks ago where my number 5 injector was over fueling and I had some odd noises like wrist pin rattle and lifter noise but luckily I replaced the injector and everything was fine, but I much like you thought I was looking at a rebuild. Sorry about your luck man. You might send mchan68 a pm on here he is a senior master tech and is up in your neck of the woods, not sure how close though.

The sad part is if ford does the repairs they won't warranty the repair if a none OEM part is used.

Personally i wouldn't use the stock cam its junk, there is only one aftermarket company that i know of and offer reground cams and new billet cams. The ramp rates are much better and the cam is better over-all the OEM cams where designed to hold a little exhaust gas to drop NOx, it is amazing the difference just there basic re-gind cam makes even without a tuner.

FORD POWER STROKE 6.0 6.4L Camshafts

The stock OEM lifters are not much better either. There is a company that offers higher quality lifter as well with a better retainer clip.

SADP ROLLER 6.0-6.4 POWERSTROKE LIFTERS

That being said i would assume they would change all the lifters, and that is no simple task. Depend how much metal went thru the engine, the engine should be completely disassembled and properly cleaned to prevent future failures. I am also surprised the dealer is not recommending a short block as they generally don't care to get this in depth, generally they don't get that deep due to cost, time involved and warranty issues.

If you plan on keeping the truck i would go with the aftermarket re-ground cam, new lifters, inspect the rockers and push rods and make sure the engine is inspected and cleaned properly.

Depending on the miles now might be a good time to freshen the motor up as-well. If you op to freshen the engine there is a long list of things i could recommend that typically are not done but will greatly improve the longevity of the engine and make it much more reliable.
