Just did an oil change at dealership 2 weeks ago, now the engine is starting to have a really loud rapping noise when i accelerate. It goes away but always comes back when the rpms drop to around 1300-1500. It reminds me of my 7.3 it's that loud, brought it to dealer they said it's a diesel. I checked the oil level and everything is fine, I'm stumped this has been the quietest diesel I have ever owned.
Same thing happened to mine on the first oil change - (Not as loud as a 7.3, but considerably louder than when new.) I read that FORD adds a "charge" to the engine to quite it down at the factory, but I cannot find where I read it, nor can I find anyone that has any info on this. Apparently FORD adds a carbon additive to the oil to make it quiter. So if anyone has anymore info please enlighten us all.
How many miles do you have on your truck? I have 7500 and one oil change and there is no noticeable difference in the sound of the engine. The dealer used 10-30 motorcraft semi-synthetic when he changed my oil.

Ford makes an oil additive like you suggested... Just google Motorcraft XL-17. It contains carbon...
I also noticed the engine in my truck getting louder, I did the first oil change yesterday. As soon as I started it up with the new oil and filter, quiet as new. Used mobil1 5w-40.

I did find reference on several sites in regards to friction modifiers that are put in the break in oil, but the only one that I could find in a search is the XL-3 not the XL-17 - is there more than one?
It sounds stupid but make sure you have enough oil in there. The sound of the motor should not change all that much, just a little hint of clatter and hum.
I did post somewhere a while back that after a few miles the engine does open up a bit and become louder as well, it's hard to justify with facts but I just have a hint of noise that was not there when she was new. It's just a diesel sound IMO. Logically, I would expect a louder engine sound when you reach 30K miles.
Speaking of changes as you put more miles on. When I first got the truck, it was the smoothest truck I ever owned in terms of internal vibration. After the first thousand I began noticing more vibration through the steering wheel. Anyone else seeing the same?
As for engine noise, it is still the same, but I have yet to get to my first oil change.
I noticed that on my truck, too. I attributed it to the tires "breaking in". When I had the new tires put on, the vibration got markedly better and hasn't come back.

I have noticed the tire thing too, but I was speaking of sitting at a red light and feeling more vibration through the steering wheel. When I first got the truck, it was velvetly smooth. Now, there is a dramatic increase in vibration felt through the steering wheel.
