so I recently purchased a 2001 f250 7.3. The previous owner, or owner before him, installed what looks like A viper remote start and alarm.well I don't want it in their. Alsp for some reason the insturment cluster Lights don't work or the wait to start light doesn't come up. Iam guessing it has something to do with this stupid device. My question is how to go about wiring it back to factory and taking this thing out. Pretty annoying having to use a flash light to see the speedometer. Appreciate any input.
I don't know anything about removing such a device.
I will suggest prior to doing any work on it, you remove the (+) Battery Cables and leave the Keys inside. Even the slightest current can render the PCM useless.
Have you perused the website for the model which is installed? it may lend information as to where the connections are made and any breaks in the system to support the unit.
Have you checked the fuses for your instrument cluster to make sure that it is not blown? I believe it should be a 15amp fuse. I would not think that a Viper alarm/remote start would have anything to do with this issue. I could see it "may" have some connection for the wait to start light, but I would think that too would be a slim chance.
remote start has nothing to do with lights.
i would bet the fuse is blown or the light switch is bad.
as for removing the viper remote, if you don't want to use it just leave it be. it will not hurt anything to just leave it in there. if you want to disable it, disconnect the batteries for 5 minutes. that will remove the memory from the remote start computer and it will no longer work.
I would not remove it. There are several on here, including myself, who have paid good money to have one installed. These trucks are still in big demand and I can tell you the Reno/Sparks, NV area has seen a rash of these trucks stolen for the last few months. Anything I can do to make sure my struck is where I left it is a plus for me.
A good sound system installer (who also typically sell/install these remote systems) can take care of an uninstall very easily... they know their way around your vehicle and you would be amazed at how fast they can remove the system. My son had a Viper remote which was acting up when he purchased his 4Runner, and the local guy had it disabled and removed in less than 5 minutes... wouldn't charge us a penny, either.

That's kind of scary. Doesn't seem too reliable if that's all it takes. They're not all like this are they? (Factory installed ones included) I know some folks who would have trouble getting a battery changed in under the 5 minute mark, and everything comes with a remote start these days.

My used truck came with one I don't recall the brand but it is not a Viper. It does not lose it's memory when the batteries are unhooked. But if you push the wrong buttons while playing with it it will lock the doors 30 seconds after the doors are closed, ready or not.
I can only speak to my Viper alarm/remote start unit and remotes.
My truck has been dead more times than I like over the years and the only time I had to re-program anything was when I bought new remotes because the screen went out.
My wife's car has a Viper remote start on it and her car sat dead with battery out for almost 2 days before a new one was put and it still worked like it did before. I had hers put in about 8 years ago so maybe its not as volatile as some of the newer ones are???
Don't want to hijack but obviously some of you guys have experience with these. I have a Ford remote start system that started acting up after the first time I used it, maybe three months after I had the truck. I had to remove a relay under the steering column and jump terminals to start her ever since. Could it be as simple as me having to reprogram the remotes??? I never did find a solution to this problem and been using a little piece of wire to jump the relay for almost a year now.
TIA!
