one wheel locking up

one wheel locking up

My front wheel locks up on gravel. It doesn't do it on asphalt. I changed the caliper and shoes. I still have the problem. Any idea why this is happening?

Possibly brake hose?

You probably changed the wrong caliper. If your left front wheel is locking for example then it's the right front caliper that is not working properly.

The right wheel locks up on dirt roads, when I slam on the brakes. Also does it during regular braking on loose gravel, like at a stop sign. I started by replacing that right caliper. Then I replaced the right brake line. Now I replaced the left side caliper, no difference. Would a bad brake line on the left side cause a locking wheel problem on the right side? It funny how it works fine on pavement.

If the left isn't working, you have to push the pedal harder, and end up locking up the right side.
On pavement, you probably have enough traction that it doesn't lock before you stop with 3 brakes.
I'd think, on pavement, that it'd pull to the right on hard stops...

If it locks up and doesn't release when you take your foot off the pedal it is probably the brake line. The inside of the brake line can collapse when it gets old and it will act like a check valve. It will let the caliper close but not bleed off the fluid pressure like a check valve effect.

Easy check. Jack the front end up and take off the wheels. Have a wrench handy that fits the caliper bleed screws. Get in the truck and start the engine so you have power boost, then mash the brake pedal down a couple times. Hop out and crack the bleeder at each side... if fluid squirts out under pressure you have a bad hose. If it just seeps out then your caliper is all jammed up.
