Shaking Steering Wheel

I was driving down the interstate the other day and i noticed that the steering wheel was shaking a bit. I first thought I had a flat, but when I pulled over, nothing. A little ways down the road, it stopped shaking and was back to normal. I was driving again today and noticed the same thing, and once again, it stopped shaking later on down the road. When I got home, I noticed that something smelled funny outside the truck. It seemed to be coming from around the left front wheel, and when I touched the wheel, it was boiling hot compared to the right front. I did take the truck muddin the other day and it hadn't had any problems before that, so im guessing that where the problem came from. I just need some ideas about what the problem could be and what I need to do to fix it. By the way, it's an 04 4x4 XLT 5.4L.

If you have been mudding you could easily have mud built up on the inside of the wheel. You may have also toasted a wheel hub when you were mudding. Do a search and you should find plenty of info on checking the hubs on these trucks.

Check the caliper, i would pull the wheel and clean all the brake parts and relube the caliper pins, your brakes could be dragging from like the above said mud. That would be a good cheap start.

Even if your brake pads look good check and make sure thats not the problem, I went through a whole slew of parts before i found out that my brakes were draggin due to the brake pads. Good luck!
