Disassembly: a few random questions

I am in the process of disassembling my truck and have hit a couple of snags.

First, is there a trick to removing the steering column? I can't seem to pull it out of the gear box. I unscrewed the two bolts that connect the column to the dash and the ones from the column to the gear box, but it won't slide out.

Also, I am removing the hood trim. Can anyone tell me exactly how to get the latch off? There is a pin that will not allow the hood trim to slide through the hood. I tried pushing it and pulling it, etc but it will not come out.

I am trying to download pictures to make it clearer but my computer is messing up.

Next: I removed the grill bars and broke almost every tab that bolts them onto the grill. Are those easily found online? I did a quick search but didn't yield any results.

Lastly: has anyone ever had the hood trim, headlight bezels, and grill bars chromed? Any ball park prices on what that might cost? I am trying to decide if I want to chrome them or paint them.

Any advice is appreciated.

Here is the picture of the underside of the hood where I can't get the latch off.

The steering column and the gear box are one piece. They must come out all at once. Jacking the truck up in the front helps get it out, as well as no seat.
The latch looks like it needs some more soaking and some heat.
mac auto has the clips and the headlight bezels and the grill bars in chrome but be prepared to pay lots for the grill. The quality is questionable for the price.
I have the bezels and they are fine though.

Ok, thanks for the reply.

If they are one piece, how does the gear box get through the firewall.

I am wondering how much it'd be to get the parts I already have chromed. I looked at macs and if it comes down to it I think I can get used to painted! Haha

You slide it out from underneath the front end, that's why you jack it up. Sorry if I wasn't clear. The top end of the column drops down to where the seat would be and then pull it out from the front. No steering wheel, of course.

G'day, I've sourced most of the parts I needed from Macs Early V8 Ford Pickup Truck Parts 1932-1947 - Macs Auto Parts

and C&G Old Ford Parts at C&G Ford Parts. Tens of thousands in reproduction.

I bought stainless steel headlight components from C&G.

Cheers, Steve.

This is what I started with.

The best picture I have of the bed.

A tribute to the only three owners.

Another shot of the bed and script pinstriped.

Finished truck

I bought a 1946 Ford 1/2 ton in 2003. I didn't get much done to it for the first eight years. I wish you luck with yours because I finally gave up on finding time to work on it and found a guy to paint it so it would be finished. I have taken out the steering column and steering box like said above. Down through the bottom of the truck. I will try to post a few pictures of the truck to encourage you to get it back on the road I have really enjoyed mine for two years now.

When we disassembled my truck, we couldn't get the steering wheel off and didn't want to destroy it in the process. Ended up unbolting the steering box from the frame and pulling it out thru the opening in the cab floor.
Sorry, but I don't remember how we removed the hood latch. We have to reassemble the hood so I guess we will run into this problem - only in reverse.

The hood latch I have always removed by just taking out the screws and then remove the latch, kind of have to wiggle and remove at an angle. I've had to always do this on all the 42-47's I've had.
