Thoughts on tranny flush

Hey guys I have a 2003 expedition with the 5.4 with117000 miles on it. I had the transmission flushed at my local ford garage. They flushed it they said everything looked good and there was no need to change the filter since it was done at the last service about 50000 mi ago. I paid them and didn't really think anything about it. What are your thoughts on this the miles are a majority highway miles with maybe 1000 miles a year towing a 3500 lb camper.

Buy 5 quarts and a filter, drop the pan, and get it done for peace of mind.

I agree with the dealer, except the filter didn't need to be changed last time, either.

I had the filter replaced for the first time in our 03 last year at 122k miles. Keeping up with regular flushes is most important.

Thanks guys I will probably just do the filter on the next scheduled maintenance. It just amazes me that filter changes are not required anymore with tranny services.

Me, too! But now I'm curious; is there already a thread on here about diy flushes?

You can say that again. I felt obliged to email the guy after the job to thank him.

So that is a good procedure for doing it yourself? What is the risk of damaging the transmission when running the engine and pumping out the fluid?

Not if you follow the procedure. If you let it run for a while with no fluid you will destroy the pump.
