Im looking for my first truck... im driving a 94 volvo 960 and i can't deal with a car anymore. im a fan of diesels for their towing capacity and generally good gas mileage.
I found a 1987 ford f350 extended cab 6.9 idi dually 4x4 and ive been reading up on the engine, obviously its not very fast but are there any other things i should look for when i got to look at it. the guys asking 5500 which i know is too much and i wouldn't pay more the 3500-4000 (still a little over priced but it has a number of new parts)
basically i don't want to get screwed over any help i could get would be great
All your pictures except the first are little postage stamps. Hard to even make out the subject.
Automatic or manual transmission? Double-check the model, AFAIK, there were no extended cab F350s at that time. That's still pretty high for a 2WD truck, esp. if it's an automatic. If this were a 4x4 manual, I'd consider $3K. How many miles on it?
Look for rust, EVERYWHERE. Not just the cab corners, doors, bedsides, etc. Look on the frame, check all the suspension hangers/perches, etc, and look at the radiator core support.
+1 on SCA maintenance; always worth inquiring. And indeed, if the seller has started it before you get there, walk away.
Oh, and diesels don't get "gas mileage"... (they don't have a gas pedal, either....)
The OP does state it is 4wd, so there's that extra value.
Being an '87 is a plus too, the last year of the 6.9, with the 7.3 upgrades. Also, the fail-prone E4DOA hadn't been introduced yet so if it's an automatic you won't get burned there.
Your mileage won't be great, I learned the hard way about duallys. When I bought the '92 I thought with the overdive my mileage would go up from the '84. It did not, it was worse. Someone, I believe here in this forum, pointed out to me I had 50% more tires therefore 50% more road friction then a normal truck. Was kind of a duh moment for me.
Of course you'll still be way ahead in mileage in comparison to the gasser equivalent.
That blacked-out look doesn't do it for me, kind of ugly IMO, of course that's just an opinion so take it for what it's worth. If it was me I'd either repaint it or bring out some accents to offset the single color, IE bring back the chrome in the grill, bring out the aluminum in the running boards, etc.
It is overpriced, but if it's what you want and are willing to pay that much go for it.
Hmm, a dually 4x4, and what they claim is an F350 but an EC? Not adding up.
Ford definitely made F350 extended cab trucks. Not common though. They just did not make 4x4 DRW, so it's either had the 4x4 added or the dual wheels added. Usually it's a DRW conversion, but check the VIN to see if it is a 4x4 VIN. If not, take a good look at the trans, transfer case, drive shafts and front axle to see what they used and what their fabrication skills were like. If it's a dually add on check the obvious like matching axle ratios and what they used for springs. Price is high, but if it's a factory F350 4x4 super cab, that is a pretty nice truck. I'd revert it to SRW but that's me.
it makes vehicles look like the hood doesn't close IMO not a great way to sell things
Or worse, they were just working on it lol.
The dually 4x4 would add a substantial number to price, as they were not available factory until 99. D60 alone is worth about 800-1000. 87 also had the option of the ZF5 which would be perfect in this scenario, id tach on another 500 for not having the C6. Paint looks decent / good from the pic, around here that would be a 4-5k outfit.
