I recently swaped a 460 into a truck origanaly set up with a 351m the bell housing is the same i had to get a flywheel for the 460 though as the 351m uses a diferent crank pattern and the oil filter hole in the frame had to be elongated just a shade outher than that every ting fell right into place did it in one afternoon. Oh ya and i used td 4025 engine mounts.
Did you buy an L&L flywheel, or just a factory 460 flywheel? What are these motor mounts you listed... a factory Ford option, or aftermarket? Thanks for the feedback!
The vintage 70's 4x2 bell and flywheel should work, and fit nice. However you will have to know if that flywheel is for an internally balanced engine-460. I'm pretty sure the 78/79 and later 460's are external balance, most of the early ones are internally balanced like your 429. Being 30 some years old, anything could be swapped, if the mill is still in the donor truck, check for external balance-easiest way is to look for the slug of metal offset behind the harmonic balancer(the internally balanced mills just have a sleeve). The trans should be the same?
My thoughts, hope it helps.
crap... that's right! I didn't realize that the 460 wasn't an option until '78 and therefore would be externally balanced. Well... now I know why the L&L swap flywheel costs so much. lol
Thanks for the input! Glad I didn't buy any of the 4x2 parts yet.
i run a 1978 460 from an ltdin my 78 f-250. i used l&l headers, motor mounts, atlernator and power steering brackets. as far asaflywheel i used a 360/390 flywheel along with a 360/390 clutch and preasure plate. never had any issues at all.
I had heard of people using an FE flywheel (360/390), but then read somewhere that the ring gear on the FE flywheel is incorrect for the 351M/400 starter location on bellhousing. Maybe that was bad info.
I'm planning to use L&L mounts & Headers, and a van oil pan & pick-up tube, but I'm undecided on the flywheel / clutch combo.
