Hello, I brought my truck band new in 2003. My mechanic said to me he just replaced my ABS sensor on the passenger side of the truck. Funny thing is I never knew I had ABS all this time.
So I drove home , about 1 hour away from my mechanic ,I notice the ABS light would come on than go out, than come back on, than go back out??? I never saw this light before in all my years driving the truck.
When the light came on, my truck would pull to the right and make the sound like the ABS was applied when I braked, same noise as in my little car makes when I stop hard. When the light would be off and I applied the brake, my truck would stop normal. The way I am used to it.
I called my mechanic, who speaks very broken English just said to bring it back,,,,,An hour away. Great guy though!
Just wanted to get any ideas before I head back to him. Thanks!!
First was when I removed my sensors to grease the unit bearings, I broke both them. The ABS light came on and stayed on. I replaced the sensors and had to drive the truck about 300ft down the road to get them to reset and go off.
Second time was this past winter. I was pulling a stuck F350 out of the snow. I have open front and rear differentials... so in 4x4 I only have front tire spinning and one rear tire spinning. After a few seconds, this caused the light to come on. I assume because one front tire was stationary. The light would not go off until I shut the truck off, started it again, and drove about 300ft down the road.
I don't know if this helps at all, but I wanted to share what I have learned in hopes it may help you your problem.
I just had a thought.... perhaps your front right unit bearing is bad. The pulling is the bearing dragging. That would also adjust the gap between the sensor and toothed wheel in the assembly that the sensor reads. Gap could cause a reading issue.
My friend replaced the front hub on the right passenger side. He said the wheel bearing was a little bit rough and probably would need to be replaced in the near future so he replaced it the other day for me. Sounds like the sensor has to be adjusted to the hub???
The ABS light came on and off a few times while driving a 35 mile trip home. The ABS light never came on before while I was driving in the past 12 years that I owned the truck.
There isn't any adjustment with these sensors. They fit in their location with a bolt, without shims or spacers.
These sensors do get grimy and dirty and many times cleaning them help. However, it sounds like yours was replaced, eliminating the grime. I'd check the connector first to ensure there's a good connection, knowing the problem stemmed originally from the right front.
