I have a nv4500 5spd on my 400. If there is an adapter for that I'm sure you can get one for a 302. Im guessing you're wanting overdrive? If so, DO IT. It's and awesome thing to have in my old truck

Yea I want over drive I have herd that a 5 spd out of a 80's model truck or mustang (80's) would work but I'm not sure and im not going to look for something that in the end won't work

I am pretty sure a zf5 can be bolted directly to the same bellhousing the 302-351 uses. Look for a 90's era f-250+ w/351.

The T5 also bolts right up to the 302 - it's what Ford used in the mid-80s through mid-90s Mustangs. If your 302 is relatively near stock, it will handle the torque fine; if you've got a supercharger or something, or want to do a lot of towing, you may want something a little beefier. I'm not sure what you mean by a "hydrologic" transmission though?

Think maybe he means a hydraulic clutch

Ah, OK ... no idea if they ever used a hydraulic clutch with the T5 (the Mustangs were cable-driven; not sure what else it was used in).

I think the ZF5 is your best bet. The ZF5 is a truck transmission and will have a lower 1st gear than those other transmissions people posted. Those other transmissions are for cars. The ZF5 has an integral bell housing but if you get the for a small block ford and not a diesel it will bolt to your engine.

There will be fab work involved in making a hydraulic clutch work. I would keep the mechanical linkage unless you have the skills to fabricate.

Is your truck 2wd or 4wd? If 4wd is it divorced or married transfer case. Divorced transfer cases make things difficult because 2wd drive transmissions. has long output shafts on them. If married your transfer case may or may not bolt right up. Might just use the one that would come with the ZF5.

Im currently putting a T5 in my truck. How I am doing it is as follows, a 3.8 v6 bell housing and transmission out of a 95 mustang. I have a mini starter out of a 93 F150 and am getting a clutch kit for a 87 f150 because it bolts directly to the flywheel. The clutch cable set up is looking like it will be far and away easier to fab for than the z-bar linkage type that I modified to clear 73 mustang long tube headers.

I've got a 351w/zf combo from a 89 f350 so it should work with no problems. The only pita about this combo is the concentric slave cylinder release bearing. It's mounted inside the trans and is all one basic unit so if the slave cylinder goes you have to drop the trans. There are 2 versions of the release bearing, 1 has a plastic housing that bolts onto the trans and the other one is aluminium. Put the trans on as it will give you good towing and control over your motor. don't use the overdrive for towing if your going up hill or pulling a heavy trailer.

I'd try talking to the guys at Advance Adapters (AdvanceAdapters.com | Engine & Transmission Conversion Adapters - Advance Adapters). Like DirtyLarry, I have a NV4500 in my '79 F250 behind a 400M. I have a billet adapter plate from bellhousing to trans. That 5th gear is sweet, plus the shifter throw is about half of what it used to be. Beware the potentioal consequences of the swap though - I have a custom crossmember, longer front and shorter rear driveshaft, plus a new hole and a patch in the transmission tunnel where the stick comes through. I'd still do it all again though. Totally changed the truck for the better.

The 89 f350 that I bought as a parts truck cost $450. The 351w/zf42 was afreebie as I bought the truck for the frame and suspension. Keep it simple, keep it cheap, keep it factory serviceable by poor boys like me. Unless you won the lottery, then send me lots of money and I'll give you free advice on how to spend it and I'll make it complicated for your convenience.
