I have in front of me the box for the "Kelsey Hayes hydraulic actuated Electric Brake Controller" (Kit No. 81740C) that I bought off Ebay and installed on the 2003 F-350 that I used to tow my 40' 5th wheel. This controller is compatible with ABS. I should have removed it before I sold the truck. To make a long story short, it was amazing how well this controller worked, as an old truck driver I really liked the instant trailer brake response and the proportional braking it allowed.
If you ever experience this you will never willingly go back...
We used the Kelsey 81739 in the City fleet back in the good old days. Is THIS anywhere close to what you're looking for? Had to be plumbed into the hydraulic system.
Do you think an 81739 B would work in an 05 Excursion?

Do you remember where you got the Tee to tie in to the brake line?
I bought one of the old style Kelsey hayes on e-bay a couple of years ago. It was new in the box and I didn't give much for it. Mounted it on my 64 f350 and works great.
When I was pulling a 8K lbs. trailer fully loaded in a Silverado 1500 in Houston traffic and had to do a panic stop, That P3 kicked ***. It stopped not only the trailer but the truck also. And that was with shoddy trailer brakes. Maybe setting it up correctly had something to do with it? Or maybe using the correct size wires and having good connections? Lot of people have the mentality "Installed it so its good to go. I don't need to read manuals. and my connections never need serviced." I've seen some BAD 6-7 way plugs and even worse wiring jobs. Then owner wants to blame truck or controller. Never themselves. They never have the time to do it right the first time or can't afford a professional to do it. But have all the time and money to do it over and over and over again. Or, Live with the consequences when there is a catastrophic failure resulting in death or property damage. This is nothing towards anyone here. Just the stupidity I've seen when there is so much at stake and extreme lack of "caring".
Sorry, Rant over.
Right there makes it NOT a true proportion controller
That is true, but it is pretty simple to adjust so that does not happen. Just reduce the boost and the setting for power. While it is not an absolutely true proportion, I would be willing to bet considerable money that if one could do a blindfold test with a P3 set up properly, the average user would not be able to tell the difference 99% of the time between it and a built-in. I say this having used and owning both.
Not saying the OEM is not good. Just saying the difference between OEM and aftermarket is far from night and day. Just my opinion.

You are right, the average person has no clue. That is why the P3 gets such good reviews
the brake smart and max brake went south due to factory smart brake controllers. i was lucky to find an old Kelsey Hayes unit. i'm saving it for my f100.
we are left with the inertia controllers.
