Yes, there is a special maf cleaner. Your gonna want to remove the sensor from the intake and hold it so the connector side is up. Inside the sensor you will see two very small curly wires. spray these wires for a few seconds but make sure not to touch them with the spray tube. Let it dry and reinstall. For maximum effectiveness, it is recommended you unhook the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer.
Not sure how common an issue this might be but pay attention to the brass threaded inserts that secure the actual sensor to the housing---they potentially can strip out without warning. Photos:
This happened to me, cross-threaded screws probably from the factory. For the most part its not necessary to completely remove the sensor from the housing.
Thanks for the help guys. So I changed the air filter and cleaned the MAF. The filter looked horrible, but according to the previous owner it was changed less than a month ago. And then I noticed that the filter housing looked like it had been cut and filed on so the whole set up was just attached by the two bolts underneath. Not sure how much impact that is playing with the air flow, but I'm now planning on getting a CAI to just replace the whole set up.
Wouldn't bother with a cold air kit on these trucks. Factory is rated pretty high. Check a junkyard for the front half of the housing and snorkel/ snout thing that goes through the front bulkhead.
For Intake mods do the zoodad. Basically take a hole saw in front of the snorkel piece.
So this is what I discovered, noticed the intake tube was cut off from the box. Not sure the reasoning behind it. Its not zoodad or gotts just seems like a way to ruin fuel:air mixture.
Well so it has been almost a week since I did all this work. last fill up was one week ago. My on board computer is acutally showing an improved MPG after cleaning the MAF; however my fuel gauge is reading right at 1/4 tank remaining and I have only drive 82 miles (adjusted to 88 with the tires). I put some duct tape around the filter housing and the snorkle to help minimize air loss. Today I noticed that the previous owner already did a Zoodad mod. This has all been in town stop and go driving between 1 and 7 miles at a time. I am beginning to really rethink the need for a bigger truck to haul my camper and stuff around. Being that the truck is my daily driver and rarely a hauler I don't think the big engine benefit is outweighing the reduction in gas mileage.
I knew I should expect less with this engine, but current calculations (estimates) is that I am getting 5 mpg in town.
5 is worse than I have ever gotten and I drove my truck for less than 4 miles one direction to work. I was averaging 9mpg. Have you done any other tune up stuff? Is your mpg from your own calculatiin or from the lie o' meter up top?
That's my calculations, but thats just an estimation. (25/4= 6.25 gal) 88/6.25 etc. I'm going to do a few tank averages. I just got the truck so I haven't had a chance to do anything with it. Will get a new air box, look into a some other things. Gonna run a few tanks of fuel system cleaners through it to get any gunk gone.
What cleaners do you use? I have used techron and Seafoam. Not sure if the techron actually does any thing though, but I know the seafoam works. Cleared up a bit of idle surging I had before just replacing the IACV on my truck.
5mpg is ridiculously bad even for a v10, I drive multiple 1 mile trips a day (sometimes towing) and generally average around 8/9 mpg and the far and few between Highway trips im around 13/14 mpg. Is the CEL on? And does the light even work, The bulb could be removed or taped over, Scan for codes who knows what other hack jobs have been done on the truck.
No dash lights come on. And everything lights up when I turn the ignition so nothing is covered or disconnected. It's only my second tank, so I'm gonna get an average of the next few.
Try pulling the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and see if there's fuel in the vacuum line. I've never heard of one going bad on a V10 but if it did it could leak fuel into the vacuum lines and mess up the fuel trim without setting the check engine light. Just a shot in the dark.
Assuming you have a 2004 or older truck, what exactly are you working on?
