Oil Use

I have a 2000 explorer 4.0 SOHC, recommended 5w -30 oil. However when I go to purchase new oil I am always offered 10w-40. Is this a problem? I end up using 10w-30

I would go with the 10w 30 instead of 10w 40.
---the numbers mean the oil acts like 10w oil when cold and 30 wt oil when hot. That is good for winter startup, and good for hot summer running.

Who keeps offering you 10w-40 and what is his/her reason? Ford specifies 5w-30, so 5w-30. There is no reason to use anything else unless you're having some kind of a problem.
