another 5r55e problem.

hey guys. i have got a 2002 mazda b3000 4x4 with a 5r55e. i bought it on boxing day for $500, when i got it, it was in limp mode, due to to poor ignition system. the last owner spent $1700 having the tranny rebuilt less than a year ago, but he said it was never right. last week i changed the valve body gaskets, due to no engine brake in 1st gear. when i opened it up the seperator plate had been replaced for the upgrade, but the upgraded plate had failed, and oil was bypassing under the gasket from 1 gallery to another. the pan and the magnet were clean, but the oil smelled slightly burned, i now have engine brake again, and the tranny shifts smooth , when driving like a granny.
if you try and drive hard, it shifts good from 1st to 2nd, and then blows into neutral, and if i let off the gas it then grabs 3rd and carrys on up the road, and when i i am slowing down, and i get to about 25mph if i go back on the gas hard it will not drive again unless i either shift into 2nd manual, or play with the gas pedal, or come to a stop and start again.
when i changed the valve body gaskets i checked the solenoids, and they all passed the ohns test.
i have just checked the bands, and the front band (overdrive) was set to 2 1/2 turns, and the intermeadiate was set at 1 1/2 turns, so i have adjusted both to 2 turns, but its not made a diffrence.
i have no codes, or OD light flashing.
sorry for the long thread, but im running out of idears

I'm not a tranny guy, but your sure the tranny fluid is the correct type & the fluid level checks in the hash marks on level ground after a 20 mile drive to fully warm it up to operating temp????
Even if you don't have any trouble light flashing saying you have code clues, I'd borrow, or come by an ELM327 scantool, load freeware FORScan on the viewing device of your choice & set it up for a complete vehicle controller scan & load the dashboard with tranny sensor inputs & see if it can spot some clues.
The ELM isn't expensive, but with FORScan, which is optimized for Fords, its a very powerful item for our electronic tool box. It more than paid for itself the first time using it about a year & a half ago, in helping me get my troubleshoot back on track & fix my 99 Ranger ABS woes. It also found body codes I didn't know I had.
Here is a thread I started on the ELM for reference. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html
Post up All trouble code clue Numbers it finds in All controllers.

thanks for the reply pawpaw. im using forscan and the mentioned elm as per you advice from earlier, and yes, theres no codes. i have just spent a day cleaning all the ground points on the truck and all the pins in the block connectors, and all seems good with that. im beginning to think that the epc solenoid my be weak/ sticking. i have added some seafoam trans tune, and i will put a few miles on and and do a tranny flush, and posibly just change that solenoid at the same time.

Check out this link on 5R55E . Maybe offers some help to narrow down cause of your problem. I vaguely remember reading that there were some issues with solenoid retainers causing issues somehow.

Ok, good that you have the ELM, so using info from the link Rockledge posted, set the ELM Dashboard up to monitor the things affecting the gears your having problems with & drive the vehicle so that it acts out & see if the ELM can zero in on the culprit.

ok thanks for the reply guys. i took it for a run earlier, and drove it hard through the gears, and it didnt miss a beat until i let off the gas coming back into town and the i had no gears, and the O/D sarted flashing, and then it let out a klunk.
i checked the code with forscan, and got p0734, so it looks like ss1 may be the problem. i will run again this weekend with forscan monitoring and i will see what i find

Good feedback on the test drive & FORScan finding a code clue after it acted out.
Seeing as how the tranny has been opened up & worked on, was an inline fluid filter added after the tranny cooler, in the return line??? Something like a Magnefine???? If not, I'd consider adding one. Doesn't take much debris to muck our tranny up.

oh boy did the plot thicken today. i didnt take long for the truck to go haywire. today i ended up with limp mode, and the codes p1000, p0731,p0733, and c1230 for the abs/speed sensor. i should have the sensor on tuesday, but how do you clear limp mode, is it a simple as fix the problem and disconect, to clear the memory?
this little truck is starting to be ungreatfull for the love and attention ive give it, not to mention the money, it had better remember the last owner who left it full of broken glass, bald tires, and an interior so dirty, that the seat bests were as stiff as cardboard, and now its as clean as a whistle, and ive even installed seat heater kit, and am planning on painting it when this snow quits. darn truck

An acting out rear ABS speed sensor can mess with tranny shifting. It can also mess with the speed-o & cruise control, as all of those things use it's PID output, so if that's corrupt, it can cause all sorts of other mischief. I believe FORScan has a reset function you can use after a repair, so the computer knows the work has been done.

hi pawpaw, from what i was reading lst night, your right about the electrical gremlins. i did read, that starting on the 2001 models the speed imput went away from the abs sensor on the rear diff and it started using the output speed sensor on the tranny tunnel, which in my case would make sence, as the speedo works well, and is as steady as a rock. would be nice if its just the abs sensor, and not a solenoid as well. i will post back in a day or 2 with my findings.

well i got my abs sensor today, and put it in and cleared the codes, and that seems to have taken care of the abs code, but the truck is still in limp. in 1st or 2nd manual it drives no problem, but in drive or reverse it will move on tick over but hitting the gas makes it slip. i had a play around with forscan, and everything is checking out good, accept for this p1000 code, and 1 thing i found strange is that when monitoring the digital range sensor, it was correct on the positions, but was onlt reading 1.6 volts through forscan, surely this cant be right as referance volts would be 5v and canbus would be around 2,5v, or obviously 12v + for main voltage ?

ok guys i thought i would just close the thread just in case anyone reads this in the future. i took the truck to the tranny shop, and they checked the truck with the pressure gauge, and breakout box, and the long and short of it was that one of the solenoids, was not closing fully, and not creating full pressure, causing slipping, and burned the clutches ect out. so i now have a brand new tranny and converter installed, and now it drives like a 13 year old truck with a new tranny.
