Interesting enough, it is only on the driver side, not on the passenger side. And I looked again, no impact damage, it is clearly underneath the clearcoat.
It starts with like paint brush hair look-alike's and then cracks in all kind of directions, like a windshield.
I'm going in to the dealership tomorrow. Already spoke with the dealer and he also said, that such thing should not be happening... especially not at 24000 miles...
i read your post with interest because my 99 windstar had a problem with the paint cracking at the body seam which was in the crease atop the roof where they mounted the roof rack. The dealer gave me a hard time but i sat there and created such a stink in the showroom they agreed to repaint it for me I found that ford used some kind of putty in some spots that cracks over time..... i dont own an expedition, but who knows what they did on them
2002 Excurison 2 tone of paint.. fully black and tan on bottom.. no crack or peeling..
sorry to hear.. take it to dealership !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! remember always start with sweet and honest. if they ingore you.. ill be doing this ! !!!!!!!
thats the last resource LOL !!!
Well, I took it to the dealership and had my sales associate look at it first. He completely agreed with me, that this kind of cracking is not normal and was not caused by any kind of impact. He referred me over to the body shop, where I went next. Also the paint and body repair shop agreed with me, that there must have been something wrong while painting those doors.
I was in and out of the body shop and already have an appointment for next Tuesday, when they will strip the doors and apply new paint. Rental car and pick-up from the dealership body shop is also already arranged.
I have to say one thing: Ford apparently really takes their customers serious and does not fool around. Very curteous and helpful and no problems whatsoever... And of course, as the vehicle only has 24,000 miles and just had it's 1 year anniversary, everything is covered under warranty.
Just wanted to give you an update on that...
I let you know how everything works out and how it looks...
I haven't checked my 2000 X with 39k miles, but what if we bought the X used and the factory warranty is gone. What leverage would we have? Go straight to Ford?
Have to look in the warranty (from Ford). Isn't there a longer warranty than 36,000 miles on rust, paint, etc.? Have to check on that.... Don't know off hand...
happy owner of a '96 explorer xlt 4wd. its the electric currant red. it all happened after I went to this hole in the wall do it yourself carwash place about 5 months ago. after I dried it I noticed the same cracks you were talking about , first they were small, but now theyre growing. It looks like little hairline cracks under the clearcoat and the cracks are like you would find in glass. It only did it on the hood, absolutely no where else, which is why Im so confused. hoping there was a way to avoid selling my soul to pay for it. But it has 160,000 on it. So its not even worth the hassle at the dealer. anyways, just thought i'd chirp in, im off to find a light for my 4wd switch, sorry to hear about all your paint problems.
Dropped the truck at the dealer's body shop this morning and will most likely get it back on Friday. At least I'll have it back for the weekend... have a lot of stuff to transport, so I need my X back to do the hauling...
Anyway, check-in at body shop was easy, had somebody to drop me at car rental place, easy check-out there as well. Ford pays for the rental, as everything is still under warranty.
At least I have the opportunity to drive a new '04 Ford F-150 Extended Cab.
Nice truck, comfy and extremely quite (don't really realize that you hit the 80 mph mark... oops... LOL)... Really nice job what Ford did with the F-150...
Overall... I still like the size of my X better, so I can't wait until I get it back!
BTW: I never had my truck in any kind of car wash or so... only hand washed... but interesting that my cracks were only on one side of the truck.
Maybe when they were painted in the factory??? Don't have a clue.

YES! Cracking all over. The paint peeled off the roof years ago. Left rear fender has a patch of rust. The truck was only 7 years old when that started. Now I have little cracks all over all the paint. It is the worst on the hood. I hate Ford paint. I feel like there is nothing to be done. We are just stuck with their crap if we want to keep the car.
