hyper-extended door damage!

any one have an over extended door problem on the newer Ford trucks? wind catching and hyper-extending door into the hinges causing 4 dimples in the frt edge! Now what! repair, new check strap, the hinges are pretty small & week for this large of a door! plus they don't have a triangulated bolt pattern for maximum strength! anything out there for fixing the problem? I just might look into it on my own.

Yep, That's pretty common in our part of the country, I'm in WYO. Everyone that has happened to has just taken it to a body shop to have it fixed. I make sure I'm facing into the wind, if possible, when I'm parking. You probably also know not to open both doors at the same time on a windy day.

Good luck getting it fixed

well Ok I made a couple of brks that bolt to the door side upper & lower strengthening the hinge mount area, also made a limit brk that prevents the door from opening to far it also bolts to the door post holding the hinge from twisting forward, greatly helped with the door not being so vonrable to swinging to far open and causing damage, it works great I'll have to post pics

Please post up the photos. This isn't a common problem, but I can see how it can happen if the door gets taken by the wind.

We've seen pictures of the oilfield trucks up north with an additional strap (basically, seatbelt webbing) from the door to the pillar, to prevent hyperextension.

OK I got some pictures but we are going to hold off posting for now, this kit works so well and is simple to install by a average truck owner. We have decide to look into marketing it as a kit and have started the patent process. Any one here on the sight ever has this problem let me know i'll be looking for field testing trucks and hope to find some good folks to work with on this sight.

I tell my wife this ALL the time and she NEVER listens. I just automatically wait for her to get out of the truck or car when its windy and then she looks at me like umm what are you waiting on? haha drives me nutz! How do you like the brake upgrade on your truck? I am over in Cheyenne.

Most of the trucks we upfit for use on the north slope of Alaska we add door straps on, these trucks see 100+ mph winds on the regular. They fold up doors all the time on trucks without straps or when they rip through the door/sill.

How are those straps fastened/attached on each end? Are the straps fabric?

They are a very thick nylon type of fabric. The ends are steel ends, bolted with grade 8 1/4" bolts in the door/sill.

Nice job autodog! They look like they will work well and last a long time. I would think that straps would stretch after awhile...unless they are really thick like lifting straps.

You mentioned you wanted an invention patent. Just be aware that now the patent is given to first to file, not first to invent.

That is true...hopefully it is patent pending and then he is covered.
