How hot was she???

OK so I'm talking about my truck....

Pulling a 4500b boat and 500+lbs of camping gear, 75-80* outside air temp, 4-7* grade hill for no longer than 5 miles at most.

On my new Edge CTS, the digital ECT went as high as 228, but the OEM Ford dash coolant temp was rock solid at the midway point.

So at 228* I would say she was at a breaking point??? Head gaskets or studs??? But I'm not sure of the temp range, would 228* in my situation be OK?

Does anyone know the digital ranges of the temp? At what point does things start to break.... 230, 240, 250????

So how hot did she get?

Thx

Was your fan roaring at 228?

The fan should keep your ECT down at the 220 mark and lower.

Unless the EGR valve was unplugged.

The hottest it got was 228 and that happened twice, another handful of times it went to 226, when it did go over 226 I did get a high rev vibration that I didn't know what it was, which since you mentioned it it probably was the fan.

I did kep the EGR plugged in since I have been told that that will schedule the fan speed. So yes the EGR was plugged in...

Might want to enter the Xgauge for fan speed into the SGII. And , you know it when you hear it. Maybe this summer I'll record the roar as I climb Mt. Hood with the trailer.

Also, in past reports, the engine is supposed to defuel at 221*f. Which I know mine hasn't at 222*f, that is the highest I've seen on mine.

Have a look at the fan wires, make sure they are not chaffed.

I've hit the 228 once or twice with my old 05 on a 7% grade app. 12 miles long. When this happens slow her down to app. 50 mph and pull the gear shift down into 3rd gear. She should cool down quickly. Let the gearing do the work. That's why the tow/haul and gear shift lever. It was app. 100 degrees out when that happened to me pulling a 31' fiver in the Eastern Sierras.

Yep, on the trip back I did shift her down to 3rd as needed, and did slow to around 50, she cooled down for that. But what concerns me is that I'm getting temps puling a 5K boat on a nice 80* spring day, late summer here it will hit 110-120*.

Now the Edge Insight I have is new, and I do not have a positive pressure sensor for temp yet, so data its collecting is from the OBDII plug in.

Would this data be supplying the OEM coolant gauge also, and why would the OEM gauge show normal and not overheating?

Are you referring to the instrument cluster gauge or the obd II sensor.

Yes referring to the instrument cluster gauge vs. the digital gauge on the Edge.

Called Edge and yes the data is coming from the ECU. And that data feeds both the cluster and the Edge digital.

My concern was that why would the instrument cluster be showing normal, but the digital be at its limits? I would have suspected that the instrument cluster gauge would have been increasing also, say to about 3/4 on the gauge not just dead center when the Edge was at 226/228.

Edge's response was that the cluster gauge will go from center to overheating quickly once it hits a certain temp, it will show normal then quickly go to Overheat.

Never thought I would hate to say these words..
So unfortunately, yes I did get her hot....up to 228..

So at 228/226 what type of damage would I have done? Usually it happened by the top of the hills and longest duration was 3 min... followed by a cool down while going downhill.

Thx
