Some aftermarket are good some are not. Same goes for the solenoids.
Myself I stay away from Autozone or Advance never had much luck with their electrical stuff.

Reason: correction
This is the pic that comes up for that unit on the NAPA site.
The armature appears to be offset from the drive, which would indicate its a gear drive unit. The smaller diameter of the motor would seem to indicate its a permanent magnet type.
I believe the 6.4 starter is a gear drive unit also. Maybe the ratio's are different between the Napa and the 6.4 starter? There's no real info available that I can find. The factory 6.0 starter is direct drive with an electro magnetic motor. I'm sure either of these units will do a good job for you.
Josh would you mind elaborating on the differences in starters? Would the 6.4 be an upgrade and what year models accept that change? Thanks.
From what have read this evening is that the 6.4 starter will bolt right in on a 2003-2007 6.0 with no modifications at all. It seems the 6.0 starter turns the motor at aprox 150 rpm and the 6.4 starter turns the motor at aprox. 220 rpm. In the videos I have watched it made a significant difference in turn over and starting speed.
That is all I know and it is all from the internet so it has to be true! LOL
IIRC those videos are from a discussion on the org. People have said it is the best upgrade they have ever done but I am not sure what the upgrade or benefit is other than turning over faster. Does tunring over faster help or hurt the motor in any way? IDK.
Faster rpm equals more High Pressure Oil pressure which means better initial firing the injectors which means better easier starting. It's a marginal difference in rom but still, probably fires off quicker. Especially helpful in colder climates.
I am going to NAPA today and will get either the 6.4 or the gear reduction 6.0, whichever is in stock. This was I caan easily return it under warranty if need be. I toyed with the idea of getting one online or a used unit off ebay but in the event it needs to be returned it becomes a drawnout process when you add shipping.
I ordered the starter Rusty linked. It will be here tomorrow morning. The only 6.4 starter they listed was 100 bucks more and would take longer to get.
I am going to eat the 27 dollar core charge, buy a solenoid and keep the old starter as a spare. A spare starter for 50 bucks, not too bad.
I installed the new starter this morning. Wow! What a difference. It turns the truck over much faster than the old one. They are both gear reduction but I am guessing the old one was a bit tired.
It does not turn over as fast the the 6.4 starters I have seen in videos but it is fast enough for me.
