i picked up a 1977 f250 4x4 with the 400cid, and it has a divorced transfer case. i was wondering if i could swap out the original transmission (it doesn't work at all) for a transmission that came out of a 2wd truck or if i should go with one that is out of a 4x4?
Since the t-case is divorced, all ya gots ta find is a trans of the same length since there are different length tail housings... the trans wom't know whether it's 2wd or 4wd.
IIRC the only difference between the c6 in the four wheel drives and 2 wheel drive is the tailshaft length. You could pull one from a 2wd but you'd have to swap tailshafts or the drive shaft between the tranny and t case would be off. Also you do realize that the "3 speed automatic" it refers to is a c6?
they did put the fmx in some vehicles so now i know that it means the c6. hopefully i can find one that i can get to fit and work well in the truck. how much difference is there between the tailshafts?
It varies between the aplications like I know the highboys have shorter ones. You can swap tailshafts but that isn't a simple unbolt and rebolt. IMHO you oughta take a measuring tape and get a length on the tail housing and find a c6 from another truck with the same size. You have the more common bellhousing so your source options are pretty broad. 460's 351m's and 400m's all have the same bellhousing. That's just my underqualified advice though so do what you want man.
how would you measure that, is that from the bellhousing to where the short driveshaft? or is it a different way to measure, i know you can get some ideas without a clear way and i dont want to mess it up! i just want to get my truck on the road faster!!
1961/78: The IDIOTS at FoMoCo used the G Warranty Plate TRANS code for ALL A/T's. One had to know which A/T was available with what engine.
In 1979, the IDIOTS finally woke up: G = C4 / K = C6.
351M/400 came with the C6, as did 360/390's, 460's and some 1978/79: F100/250 300 I-6 & F100/150 300 I-6 & 302.
3 speed automatic refers to the FX/FMX/MX Cruise-O-Matics; C4 & C6.
FMX introduced in misc. 1968 FoMoCo Passenger Cars, used thru 1989. The only trucks that came with it were 1973/77 F350's with 300 I-6.
good information, i didnt realize that the fmxonly came on i-6. you learn more every day! but does anyone know how to measure the tailshaft length or the body of the whole transmission?

Applications: 1973/76 F250 360 4WD / 1977 F250 400 with full time 4WD
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D6TZ-7060-A .. C6 Output Shaft / 17 5/16" long / 25-34-36 teeth with 10 splines / Obsolete
that's exactly what i have but the odd thing is it looks like the drive shaft from the transmission to the transfer case looks like it can extend or retract. is that normal or are my eyes just deceiving me?
Edit- does anyone know why a c6 would only engage in reverse? the fluid level is full. the pervious owner said it only ran in reverse when he got it, and it sat in his yard for about 2 years.

"slip yoke"? I'd say it's normal since ya got a divorced T-case.
.. yup, to me that's a bad transmission because it doesn't engage forward. Meaning, the internals are clogged, clutches are burned up, worn out, or the hydraulic circuits to move forward aren't working.
