Destributor timing

Got my 226 rebuild started today but cant time it. The dist.is at the end of its travel and i am off(btdc) several degrees. How do i get it corrected?

Sounds a lot like the distributor is "off a tooth". Remove and reinstall with the rotor leading the #1 tower a little more. The helical gear on the distributor gear causes this. If you bring the #1 cylinder to TDC and see where it points now you'll get the idea. Sometimes it's kind of a bear to get everything lined up and drop in right.
