P401

a little history here, about 2 years ago I got my first P401 so I changed the egr valve and it went away for a little while. Then I came back several months later and changed it again. along with the P401 I get heavy black smoke when taking off from a dead stop and after it gets a little speed it will run good. here lately it seems I can only get 2 weeks to a month between cleaning the EGR valve. Each time I clean it has a bb size piece of carbon stuck and is holding the valve open and there are several more under the EGR valve. each time I try to vacuum the carbon chunks out and clean everything as best I can.

As of now I'm fed up with it and would like to do something to make it more reliable. would taking the intake off and cleaning completely and adding a EGR delete kit eliminate the carbon from building up? Thank you for the help.

These are commonly called egr marbles. Caused by a tiny leak in the egr cooler. Carbon ans soot bonding together and being baked by the heat of the exhaust gases.
Left unattended you will eventually have a complete cooler failure.

thanks for the help, I am not completely sure of what all the egr delete consist of but don't they remove the egr cooler? also I drove down the highway at lunch today and my delta is still at 7 190/197 same as a couple years ago. the truck now has 220xxx miles.

An EGR delete kit consists of a new up pipe for the exhaust, a cooler delete (usually a j tube unless it the IPR Gen style), a small coolant hose, and an EGR valve block off plate.

Yes, I believe it will make your truck more reliable. I will never be able to leak coolant into your intake.

This is one of those situations where it may not happen today or 3 years from now.
You are just rolling the dice each day waiting for snake eyes to show up.

Thanks for the help, I live in arkansas and we don't have any sort of inspections so it looks like I'll be doing the delete. Does anybody have a problem with this kit

http://sinisterdiesel.com/i-15883450-sinister-diesel-egr-delete-kit-for-ford-powerstroke-2003-2007-6-0l.html

I washed my motor off today and I've started watching some videos and reading some write ups on it to get a idea of what all it takes. I plan on starting on a Friday morning in 2 weeks and seeing how long it takes.

With all of the carbon build up I have in the intake would it be wise to completely take the intake off and clean with simple green.

Also are there any other things I should do while I'm in there?

If you haven't already, upgrade the STC fitting on the HPOP.

Thanks I believe about 2 years ago I had the STC fitting along with stand pipes and dummy plugs done.

as of today im 12 days out from starting so I have to get everything headed my way on ups now. I know I will need a new torque wrench, mine is 1/2" drive 25-250 so now is a good time to get a small 3/8 drive. I have a air ratchet but I think i'll go ahead and get one of the Milwaukee ratchets, they look nice. for sockets I have 1/4" and 3/8" short and long through 13mm. sae through 3/4" I have plenty of extensions. 1/2" drive through 1-1/4" (impact) I have plenty of pry bars.

this is a few of the things I can come up with off the top of my head I will need please let me know what I am forgetting both parts and tool wise.

1. sinister egr delete
2. intake gaskets X2
3. thermostat (mine is 2yrs old)
4. new coolant
5. new oil, oil filter, fuel filter

if there is a thread for this already I'm sorry, if you could please post the link. Ive been through tons of pages and have seen several partial list. when I start this I have to have everything with me as my wife will be out of town so no rides to the parts store. Thanks again have a good day.

Thanks, I think my wrenches stop at 19mm but sae I go up to 2"

I plan on pulling the intake then soaking it in simple green and the scrubbing and powerwashing to get all the old crap out.

any other tools I might need? also how big of a pita is taking off the wiring harness and getting it back together correctly?

also should I get new O-rings for the turbo lines?

Ok I got the delete ordered today and picked up an inch pound wrench (30-250) and a milwaukee cordless ratchet. Also my new filters came in today.

As I'm putting this back together I assume some parts will need locktite and others antisieze. Are most just using a blue medium strength locktite and copper antisieze? Also is there anything posted on what bolts get what? Thanks only 1 week and 2 days left
