Big question is what are your intentions? How far do you want to go?
I went as far as suggested to use a high gears (currently 2.75s) and also I used a mild 2000 stall. Any more aggressive I would have needed 373s and a bigger stall.
Are you going to tow? Drag race? Is your intake going to be for low end tourque or high end performance?
Search for a cam on summit racing by engine, they offer many brands and also have ALOT of info on each as far as gear and stall recommends, what rpm its good for, blah blah blah

I suggest reading up on the FE engine builds linked in Part II of the Tech Thread Compilation linked in my signature below... ya might be spending money that ya don't have to. But if you are, then at least be informed about why you're doing it.
I read all that thinking I might rebuild the 390 in the dump truck. Decided to take a trip to JY and got a price of $400 for a good 390. Think the dump truck is just getting a JY motor for now.
