hola all, to start were workin on a 97 f250 light duty 4.6 4x4 5spd. tryin to figure out where a bearing noise is comming from in front end. replaced both front hub bearings from napa. 150 each... the noise is still there. someone said could be cv shafts... although ive never heard a cv shaft make this noise i replaced them anyway cuz one was clickin last time was in the woods. bearing noise is still there..... in a long bank turn to the left the noise goes away till start to straighten out. while replacing the half shafts i grabed the plates the shafts bolt to and spun them and checked for slack. none found. front diff's full with no leaks. as title says.... what next? any help is appreciated. thanks pistol.
After the long bank turn to the left and you straighten out can you tell what side or aera the noise is coming from? My guess it will be coming from the center of the vehicle and hard to determine if its left or right the noise is coming from. I have a suggestion and dont think Im crazy because it works. Go to a parts store and buy a long manual choke or hood release cable. Remove the cable from the cable housing. Rout the cable from the passenger compartment to the front axle. Using a beam clamp or something like it such as a bolt hard fasten one end of the cable to the front pumpkin. If using a choke cable you dont need to do anything to the other end. Have someone else drive though the same conditions and press the plastic **** end of the cable to your ear in a way you close your ear off with the plastic ****. Vibrations will travel up the cable to your ear. Move the mounting location around until you pinpoint the location of the noise. This is what i used for years and years until I got a listening system. Don't laugh, done correctly it works.
cant really tell what side its commin from, i've went as far as havin someone else drive and me in the bed listing to both sides. as the wheels turn faster the noise gets faster and vice versa. took the front driveshaft out today. no help. i recon it has to be in the front diff. supposed to get 4-6 inches of rain between now and friday. recon it'll be after i dont need a trollin motor to get around before i tackle that job.
I would look over the rear end also. sometimes the noise appears to be front axle, but could be rear pinion / wheel bearings / universal joint.
Absolutely! Great point Steve!
I forgot to mention not stopping with the first thing you think is making noise. I don't focus on the first that indicates noise or vibration. One of the U joints in a double cardan can sound like the rear of the trans is about to come apart.
turns out that i've replaced the front wheel brgs 4 months apart. the right side went out. locked up, so i replaced it. few months later is when i aquired the brg noise so i automatically resorted to the drivers side cuz the pass side is new...... turns out that the new brg that was just replaced was the culprate. napa ( no auto parts available ) replaced it under warranty. have a nice quiet ride again. thanks for all the input guys !!! hope i can help yall in the future.
