I have a '78 F100 with an aftermarket 38 gallon tank. I am looking at a Curt class II hitch which looks to mount to the bottom of the frame rails, which means the bolts will extend up into the area between the frame rails where the tank flanges are. I am thinking I may be able to just get away with shorter mounting bolts - has anyone ever mounted this combination before?
Is it as straightforward as it looks or did you run into real conflicts between the tank and the hitch?
I suspect your question is pretty specific to the model year of truck, so you may have more luck asking this question in the 73-79 sub-forum.
Thread title of "mounting aftermarket hitch to frame rails - possible fuel tank interference?" is one option.
On my '78 (F250 4 wd) with 38 gallon tank, the 1/2"x1"hitch bolts seem to clear the flange OK. The flange seems to be in roughly the same place as both the original and re-pop 19 gallon tank. Not sure on the f100 but some 1" length bolts may help.
