Ok, I found a p/s gear box from a 73-79 F150. The fella said 100 bucks and is holding it for me. Planing on converting my '75 to power steering once I gather all the pieces. From what I hear this is the one to get. Is this a straight bolt on or will I need to fab up a bracket to mount it to the frame? I'll probably try and get a rebuilt pump and new hoses but what about the brackets. From what I recall there are only two to get. It's hard to find older model trucks here in Houston. Called 9 places today and only found one and it's on the shelf! Two of them said they were crushing them all...Any comments or suggestions.
IMO, you want to stay away from the 2wd F150 conversion. Even with the recommended 2" lift kit, the handling characteristics are not very good and many of them have bad bump steer. The conversion that seems to be popular these days is the hybrid F150 4x4 box.
Here is a write up of the specifics: conversion details
There is also another conversion that uses a Toyota 4x4 IFS steering box that has been popular.
That box is not a direct bolt on, you will need a bracket that welds to the bottom of the frame. The box is very tall and only the one upper hole will actually bolt to your frame and you have to drill a new hole for that too. It is a fairly common and cheap conversion, most the bronco vendors sell the brackets. The pitman arm sits much lower than stock, so bump steer can be a problem if you have no lift. If you do have a lift you dont need a drop pitman arm though.
