Yesterday I was driving around some back roads and I started to hear a ticking when I accelerated when I left my foot off the gas pedal it went away. But when i put my foot on the gas again it comes back. You really cant realize it when you have the radio on... Ive been experiencing rough idling when I come to fast stops and quickly speed up again.
The ticking seems to only happen after like 20 minutes of driving. Most of my trips are only 10 minutes, to either school or to work so it really doesnt happen very often... Although college will start in a few months (30 minute drive) so I wanna get this fixed before something major happen.
Also on a side note, when going up hills it feels like it has delayed shifting.
I really dont want to put in anymore money into this truck...already put $2000 into it the first year of owning it. I guess the good thing is that I got it for $1700
keeping my fingers crossed nothing is wrong with the transmission or motor
Any ideas about what is wrong?
*I have a 1995 v6 4.0 XLT ranger with 160,000 miles
Few things come to mind here,
-Low grade gasoline would cause it to tick.
-Moisture in the fuel system.
-Dirty lifters (from dirty oil)
-lose exhaust shielding
Not sure on the hissing, that would depend on where it is coming from. It could be the cooling system (pressurized it will hiss some). Hissing could also be an exhaust leak or a vacuum leak as you suspect.

I went down to the car mechanic friday to see if there was any vacuum leaks and there was none. I heard the hissing shortly after I left the mechanic obviously. And it seems to be coming from the gas tank. I read and it normal for the tank to do that i ugess to build up pressure? Ive already told my mechanic about a low gas pressure because sometimes my car doesnt turn on the first crank, I need to leave the power on (to let fuel pressure build up) and it turns right on. Could my fuel pump be causing bad mpg, poor acc, and stalls?
And ill try and get some better gas, the place I usually go to is known to have crappy gas *thats probably why its so much cheaper than everywhere else. Its fine to mix different grade gases I assume right>
And thanks
A fuel pump that's going out could cause stalls, I'm not so sure on bad MPG and poor acceleration. Usually when they are going bad on me I'm more focused on the stalls then the MPG. Its worth looking into tho.
Its ok to mix different grades of gas. For example Supreme is just a mix of regular and premium right there at the pump. It is ok to run premium in your truck once in a while. But I wouldn't do it too often as it burns richer (and hotter).
Watch out for cheap gas tho, it often has a high water content that can cause damage to your engine over time.

Thanks for the response. Was just looking at repair costs average around my area for fuel pump replacment and its around $450 Kinda low on money at the moment, spent 2000$ on repairs in the first year of owning it so far. You think its alright if I let it go for a couple of months? Just dont want to get stranded somewhere because the fuel pump isnt working haha. And today I got some 89 octane for a change just to see what will happen

I wouldnt worry about the fuel pump too much, When it starts sputtering and stalling below 1/2 a tank and in turns then I would start worrying about it.
If the ticking clears up with better gas you should be fine, But keep an ear on it. If it gets any worse It may be time to dig in deep and hunt it down.

Haha...well i havent had any stalls yet *knock on wood* But sometimes on turns and quick stops my rpms drop below my average 1000 RPM idle and goes down to 600RPMs, once or twice its dropped down to 500.
And I think I stated above already that I hear a loud hissing from my tank area but I guess thats normal "heard that its trying ot build pressure" and it takes 3 turns of the key to start up on mornings or when I dont use my truck for a day. Leave the power on for like 10 seconds and it starts up with no problems.
