Guess I was careless or maybe impatient. With all the snow here in NC lately, I thought the defroster had heated up enough to let the wipers sweep off the snow. But it wasn't snow it was a solid molded tight chunk of ICE and when I turned the wipers on there was a huge CLUNK and then nothing. I chipped out the ice and now the wipers don't move.
Is the linkage under the plastic cowling where the wipers arms attach to the shafts? How easy is it to get to the linkage? I guess I won't know what's broken and needing replaced until I get inside.
Yes the wiper assembly is under the plastic crowl. The motor does drive shafts that move both wipers together. The assembly from ford is $400. They sell it as an assembly because the plastic bushings wear out and cause warranty issues.
You can pull the crowl and check the connection to ensure you have power. Then replace what is needed.
Success! Took the cowl off and found the main linkage arm had bent just before the connection to the rest of the assembly and the bushing popped off. I removed the entire assembly, carefully bent the arm back to where it looked like it should go and gently pressed the bushing back in place.
Tons of dirt, leaves and crap under there!
Cleaned and reassembled, the wipers work fine! Just need to find some Christmas tree fasteners to reattach the wiring loom and I'm done.
I'm no mechanic but I do love this truck and when things like this happen, it's as bad as one of my kids getting hurt. If I had to make a comparison to another type of relationship... I'd say I'd married way up when it comes to my truck!
At first glance, the thread title "Help, I can't wipe" sounded like you were out of TP. There's been a run on that this past week.
Yes I though the same, that the OP was making a pun relating to the nation wide TP shortage due to panic hoarding, but then I noticed that the OP was from 2015!
