1987 F250 Starting issues

Hi, Ive been a long time viewer of this forum but this is my first post, seems like theres a lot of good knowledge on here!

I have a 1987 F250 351 Windsor. Just put a new engine in it and had replaced the starter solenoid a few weeks prior. Right now I can start the truck but only if I jumper bettween the solenoid posts. I was wondering what I can rule out at this point? Obviously the starter is good if it cranks when I jumper it. I'm wondering if it could possibly be a bad ground or if it is something in the ignition key switch itself? I also thought maybe the neutral saftey switch could be bad because sometimes in the past I would have to jiggle the shifter lever when it was in park to get it to start cranking. But if the NSS was bad would you still be able to start it by jumping the solenoid?
Thanks. Greg

Check for voltage on the small wire going to the solenoid. When you turn the ignition to the start position you should get 12 volts there to engage the solenoid. If you don't have power there you can jump the neutral safety switch and see if you get power to the solenoid when you turn the ignition to the start position.
