Hey guys, before I pick up my truck, I was wondering, what type of oil should I get for the Borg-Warner 3-speed with OD transmission, and how much does the trans + OD unit take? And also, what type of fluid does the Differential take? I was also wondering, will Running Shell Rotella-T 15W-40 be good for the 240Ci Straight-6? I think it will take 6 quarts with filter if I recall..
Not sure for the OD, but 90wt gear oil for the rear. Straight 30wt was what the engine was designed to run, 10W 30 would be good enough for most. No need to run the the 40wt, but if you feel ya gotta, it wont hurt anything.
The expensive purple people eater oil is there to help you spend your money, but in my O just peeing your money away.
Use the same 80-90W in your T-85N OD transmission. Capacity is 3.5 pints. Take some time to fill it, as the drain hole between the transmission proper and the OD housing is rather small, and the gear oil is pretty viscous.
As John said, there is no need to use Rotella. Unless you are doing oil sampling, it would be a waste. It has the same additives as all the other oils (except it has more zinc additives), just a lot more of them to make it give adequate protection for more miles or to handle the heavy duty work of a diesel.
If you were rebuilding or putting in a brand new engine, I would use Rotella (or another higher zinc oil) for the break-in period, Or, if I wasn't sure that the new wear components (e.g. camshaft, rings, crankshaft and etc) were designed to use today's oils without zinc, then I would consider it. But, I WOULD use an oil sampling business to make sure I am not wasting it, as it is expensive. I was getting 15,000 miles per oil change with Rotella in my diesel.
For more information, suggest you research ZDDP. Lots of information out there.
But since your engine is already broken in and used, the inexpensive oils will work just fine for your truck.
Ah ok, now should I be using GL-4 or GL-5 type fluid in the transmission and diff? And also, doesn't the T-85N have 2 fill holes, one for the trans and one for the OD?

The trans has 2 fill holes, the Warner OD manual calls for 30W oil in the OD. I've always used 80-90 gear oil in both my r10 and r11 OD's with no problem but it should be a non hypoid type, hypoid gear oils are for the rear end gears. Try to find GL4 for the trans, I've read many posts about GL5 having additives that destroy soft metals like brass syncros.
I Found some GL-1 90wt oil, http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...201_0410679149 will this be the best? I was reading it has no EP additives, and from what I can figure it was what was used because of the brass synchros.

I'm amazed anyone still has that available. I would think that it would be safe to use in the trans. I agree that the trans should use oils without EP additives from everything I have read. I see they list it as manual and rear end which I find confusing as I thought the rear ends needed the EP additives?
The more I have read over they years about the changes in these lubricants the more confused I seem to get..
