oil question
Hey guys i usually run shell rotella t6 but my local wally world hasnt had any in stock. I picked up mobil1 turbo diesel oil 5w-40 and wanted to see if anyone else runs this oil and how they like it.
Also does anyone run lucas oil additive? A good friend of mine has been running powerstrokes for his whole life and swears by it. I had another guy i work with tell me about it and was curious if its good to run it?
Thanks,
-AJ

The Mobil1 should be fine. I use Mobil 1 Trans fluid in my transfer case and I have used Lucas gear oil with no issues; however, I am not entirely sold on oil additives for the engine. As with most aftermarket products, you find about as many people who like them as dislike them so the best thing to do is conduct a little of your own research and decide if the additives are right for you. I do know people that use Lucas products and they say that there have been no issues. The overwhelming majority on here will steer you away from Lucas additives. Any good brand oil is all you should need for your engine in my opinion but they do sell tons of the stuff so I could be wrong.
I am a rep for a synthetic lube manufacturer and a chemical engineer with 25 years in industrial manufacturing... you do NOT want to use Lucas oil additive. With a good quality oil, NO additive is required, and the chemistry of the additives can easily conflict with the chemical formulation of the engine oil and sometimes really screws things up.
In particular, the Lucas oil additive typically inhibits the anti-foaming package in engine and gear oils which results in excessive oil foaming. Foam in the oil will... not may... WILL result in something called "cavitation" on the surface of your oil pumps' gears which will result in pitted gear surfaces and declining pumping efficiencies.
NOW... that doesn't say anything about the Lucas oils (engine, gear, etc.), but just about the oil additive. If you want to talk about the quality of Lucas oils, you might want to talk with Scott Bloomquist who has won the past two Lucas Late Model Dirt National Series while NOT running Lucas products (and he's only a hair behind first place for the current season). Additionally, I know a mud pit racer in the NE Alabama region who typically dominates his racing class who FIRED Lucas because the Lucas oil cost him an engine last year, and he was getting the Lucas for FREE (roughly a case of engine oil every weekend). He said, "I would rather pay for GOOD oil than run any more of that Lucas junk in my $30,000 engines", and this is from a man who also used to help manage the R&D team at Lucas.
Perhaps your friend's engine oil chemistry just is not as sensitive to the Lucas additive chemistry.

What about Additives?

Nothing more than an oil thickener, look at that viscosity...nearly 10 times what a 40 weight oil is. On a cold morning your injectors will not be a fan.
Thanks for letting me steal your UOA.

I use Mobil 1 Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 (dino) and my truck seems to like it better than Rotella or Delo. I haven't tried the synthetic but I'm sure it's fine too. Except for coolant and fuel, pretty much every fluid I have is Mobil 1 synthetic.
As for the oil additive, I agree with F250_. I used the Lucas for one interval and read enough to never use it again. I am not going to do anything that will react with my additives. Since it takes high pressure oil to actuate the injectors, I leave well enough alone. Just my .02
