You need to know how the dash light is lighted to trouble shoot the system.
First question is does the 4L come on for that switch position?
Does the 4L result in actual gear reduction?
These are important indicators of what the system is doing.
.
The dash lamp is actually lighted from a GEM module controlling separate leads to the dash lamps.
Going backwards, the firewall solenoid passes the light signal back through the transfer case motor circuit board, then back to the Module, for the light controls.
You can begin to see the importance of finding out what is or is not happening with the circuit and 4wd functions.
The front axle actuator does not control any functions other that lock together the left front axle assembly in response to vacuum being applied to it from the firewall solenoids.
Good luck.
