What are the benefits and risks with hollowing out my cats? I know it is illegal. How hard is it to do? can it hurt my motor or make any lights come on due to the oxygen sensor?
Ive heard them before. They are louder, but in an annoying way. Like glasspacks or riceburner pipes. No class at all. If you want sound, buy a borla exhaust, if you want performance, buy a flowmaster. The only thing gutting your cats will give you is a couple hours work replacing them every time you are inspected.
phantom i think you got it mixed around FLowmaster mufflers barely flow better than stock mufflers. However Borla make the best sounding best performing muffler around. For sound go with Flowmaster... but if you want the best of both worlds go with Borla.
ok now rangerfan 2.9 i'm gonna step in now!!!!
you say stock mufflers flow better than flowmaster's???????
come on na.i could ship you a stock ford truck muffler to cut open so you can see the differences on the inside...all that packing and stuff compared to flowmasters v-diflector.
come on bro don't confuse the guy, help him!
no im not saying that flowasters dont flow better than stock..what im saying is that there are plenty of mufflers out there that flow way better than flowmasters. Dont get me wrong i love flowmasters i have one on my 90 ford ranger 2.9l and it sounds great for a v6...nice and rumbly. however for example glasspacks are a way better performing muffler than flowmaster. However i dont like them since my engine is a v6. I feel flowmaster should be sued for false advertising since they claim that there muffler is such a free flowing muffler when actually they are quite restrictive. If you want sound GO WITH FLOWMASTER if you want performance go with Glasspacks or any kind of Borla exhaust just to name few.
I was "forced" to hollow out my cats (hi flow) when a rich running condition and a couple of backfires started them breaking down. The cats had less than 1000 miles on them and I couldn't afford to go out and buy new ones again.
To hollow them out, I just stood them up on end and used a 4ft piece of lead pipe. Only took a few minutes.
As for legality, you already stated you know this is illegal.
As for sound, I don't like it. Sound cheap to me.
As for performance, I can't tell a difference.
As for 02 performace, not sure.
I'm just about done with all the mods I want to do with a recent engine swap. Once the swap is done, the next item to buy is new cats.
I have no cats and a Flowmaster 40 series SI/DO dumpped on my 98 F-150, and it sounds unbelieveable. I get starred at by Mustangs and Camaros. I also had to run MIL eliminators to prevent the CEL from coming on. It was worth every hour it took, i now have one of the loudest if not the loudest truck where i live. I would never go back to stock cats or high flows, high flows sound horrible.
MIL eliminators stop your check engine light from coming on when you take your cats off. the only ones i know of are made for 4.6 and 5.0 mustangs, which are what im using. I dont know if they make ones for 351s. Heres a link to the ones i have:
looking at the summit cataloge right now and they have the obd11 o2 simulators for gmc and mustang only, cheap though.
try the guys who make them,(caspers electronics)
