I really want to put a set of buckets in the front of my crew. The original seat is deteriorating. I found some smittybilt seat for cheap but they aren't adjustable. That doesn't matter very much because the bench I have now doesn't. What I'm planning on doing is buying two buckets, build a frame to use the original bolt holes and connect the two seats, build a center console. I'd like to be able use the original slider also. Run both seats and the console back and forth. Do you guys think this is possible? it doesn't look like I could use the slider without dismantling the bench. Which is okay beacause it's falling aprt anyway. Do you all think what I'm describing could be built?
There's a link in the tech info compilation for using big Bronco buckets in a Dent... with pics too. The set up uses a Corbeau bracket.. JBG is a seller but I figure the pics can provide enough info to fabricate from.
Otherwise, I'd look at 92-96 SuperCab F-trucks and Broncos for buckets. I picked a console out of one a coupla weeks ago and it was tempting to have power buckets.. with an inboard armrest no less! Again, darn near anything can be made to work if you can fabricate.
At 5 foot 10 inches tall I slide the seat almost all the way forward in order to drive (I also just like driving closer like that). This also creates more space in the back. Anybody taller than me would have a real hard time being able to use the clutch and brake, clutch especially. That's why I really want to be able to adjust with the slider. If my first plan doesn't work I could definitely build a frame like that. I'm could also buy sliders for the buckets individually too, but they cost about $100 apiece. As far as pick and pulls go, I've been to all the ones around me and they suck. EVERYTHING is gone or trashed. Cars with ok interiors have had the doors left open so they are now full of mildew and everything else. The prices aren't to good either. I don't really like the look of the ugly newer tan seats in our trucks. Just tacky inour trucks imo also.
I feel like I'm sliding around with the bench. The console is mainly for cup holders. Was ingesting liquids while driving not a thing in the 70's?
I know what you're talking about with smoking, rode in a friends classic cadillac the other and it must have had 8 ashtrays all over the car. Ive seen the ashtray cup holder in my lmc book but it doesn't look like it would work very well. No no room for 32oz and it look like stuff would fly out of it. Now I feel whiny for not going with you guy's plans lol. My father has a 97 chevy and the cup holders literally sit right in front of the middle vents for the heat/ac. Your drink blocks the vent. A truly stupid design.
Classic mustang seats would be pretty cool though. The low backed kind from the 60's.
The ashtray cup holder I have works well for cans and bottles, and regular-sized fast-food drinks. It's about as deep as the factory cup holders in my '01 Mustang. No idea about 32-oz drinks though; I've never tried that. If they're the ones with a normal-sized base that expand out up top, they should be fine. I don't think the ones that are fat at the bottom would work.
I might buy a one to hold off until can accumulate the funds for the buckets. A middle console could have cup holders for the back too. If I can get this done I'll make sure to post a thread about it for you guys.
If you are wanting the Vintage look, then go with the 78/79 Bronco Hi-back's with a center console. FWIW, I am planning to put a set of 40/20/40 OBS seats in my 79 F350 SC 4x4. Working on fabbing up a seat pan to install the seats to instead of drilling holes in the floor board. Also, the 40/20/40 seat have a jumpseat in the middle with a fold down console which is perfect to put cell phones, drinks etc...Here are a couple pics of my 79 bronco's with hi-backs...
