I have a 78 f250 that I want to build into a good wheeling rig, it has a d44 front wich I'm looking at the michelin surplus tires in the 40-44 inch range, and obviously the d44 isn't gonna hold up... my suspension plan is to use super duty lift springs with a rear shackle swap...
My main question is what would be the cheapest axle to put under the front? I know the easiest swap would be the 78-79 d60, but they seem pretty rare on the west coast.... I know the latter axles, the spring pads are in the wrong location.... too wide... would it be cheaper to re tube the latter axles so they would work on my 78? I'm not a cheapass, I just want the cost effective way of doing this... fab work does not scare me at all...
Another thought I had was using a d60 off of a 94+ dodge 2500, because they are cheap... has anyone done this swap? Is the axle similar to the 78/79 axle? I know I would have to cut off the brackets and do my own spring pads...
Well, the dodge d60 is pretty thin tubes, way thinner than even the d44 in the housing you have now, plus the dodge d60 is low pinion, making it even weaker again. The high pinion is by far stronger than a low pinion, and the tube thickness factors in as well. Others might have varying opinions, but personally I would take a HP 44 with the normal wheel bearings over a low pinion 60 with unitized wheel bearings.
Eh unit bearings don't bother me, I have an 01 f350 on 35's and 202k on the clock, haven't had any problems yet knock on wood...
I didn't know the dog d60's were thin tubes and a low pinion... that's no bueno... is it hard to retube an axle? 80's d60's are pretty common where I'm at
