a rather consistent knock

Hi, I drive a 2002 PSD 7.3 mostly stock, I purchased the truck about 3 years ago and have always had a slight knock. I have a k and N filter, a boost guage and a egt guage. I also utilize the Superchips 3 setting programmer. I tow a 33ft toy hauler.. From California. I have always noticed the knock and others have also noticed, this last trip to the ocean I had many comments on how my truck sounded. Many were interested in what was wrong. I did not know. it seems to be louder now, but very consistent. from the time I start it until I shut it down. its louder at idle, but seems to increase speed with the rpm's , when towing I can still hear it but its faint because of the truck running at 2200 -2500 rpm's and louder just from road noise and truck noise. No power loss and 12 mpg all day long, of course better mileage in the high performance setting. I have read many forums and heard from injectors to exhaust to push rods to pistons. before digging to deep I would like to get some positive direct feedback.

Thanks

While everything you list is in the 7.3rd police precinct lineup, injectors will bang on an otherwise healthy engine. If you have air in the fuel (Hutch mod link in my signature), this can cause cackle and banging. If the air in fuel is bad enough, it will damage the injectors - usually #2 and #7, because they get first dibs on air coming into the heads. #8 is the most notorious for cackle with a little air in the fuel, but that's for a different reason than what happens to 2 and 7. 2 and 7 eat whatever air is there, #8 only experiences a momentary pressure drop because 6 fired just before it.

X2 in the hutch & harpoon mod. A must in my opinion weather or not it is a cause of your knocking. How many miles on her?

ok, i wasnt sure what the mod was until i looked it up. i saw this on a post a while back but didnt think that was my problem. I will do the mod first thing, so could this possibly take care of my issue or am i going to need to replace the injectors? i read that these injectors are made really well. will a buzz test tell me if they are bad or do i need to do another type of test. 189,000 miles on this 7.3.
thanks for the quick responses.

I wouldn't get in a hurry to replace your injectors unless you're having starting problems. Even then, other issues would likely come first. If you're in a hurry to pop the VCs, re-torquing your injectors to 120 inch/pounds may very well rid you of some knock. Torquing the rocker arms to 240 inch/pounds might even help. Both of these are book torque, and sometimes things work their way loose from the factory.

i did purchase the repair book for my truck about a year ago, I will torque down to specs for sure. Now how much should I be paying for this Hutch Mod?, and where should I buy from? I really appreciate the feedback and look forward to getting to know my PSD better.

Thank You

Here is the link to a kit I have used on both my 7.3L's and many on FTE have as well.

thank you very much for the advise. here I go. I hope I do not procrastinate this job. it looks fairly painless as long as I go slow and take my time. I will repost once I do some work. one last question, Oil and Fuel additives, Yes or No? do they really help? and what is a good recommendation?

Oil - no... leave that one alone. Our injectors are oil powered and you don't want to play chemistry set with those.

Fuel - my state has 5% biofuel, I don't know about others. Biofuel has more lubricity that plain ULSD. Cetane is usually lower in ULSD, so I use additive that prevents gelling in winter, adds lubricity to the fuel, and raises the cetane level. Some do it occasionally, I do it every tank.

You can put the parts together from local sources for the Hutch and Harpoon for well under $100. I would recommend using a see thru screen type filter before your pump rather than the screw on filter. Like others a cetane boost / anti gel additive with every tank is all I would recommend. I use power service in the white bottle. They make one in a grey bottle without the anti gel but rather than switch winter and summer I just buy several of the white bottles when I find it on sale and use it yr round. Virtually all parts stores, tractor supply, wal-marts have it. just watch for sales and stock up.

Here's a link to a parts list and how to for the Hutch mod

If I had it to do over I would spend a little extra and go with the Racor pre pump set up. I have a see thru screen but will be upgrading once I get a few other things paid for.
