I've got 12 volts in my 48F1, and the oem 6volt wiper. Of course it doesn't work, but maybe it would if i used some sort of voltage step down device. idk
I've never tried to get it working since I bought the truck 9 years ago.
Is that the popular fix? Or is there a good aftermarket 12 volt replacement?
What's the best fix?
Right now I just use RainX and don't often use the truck in rainy weather, but lately been getting stuck in some early morning fog and a wiper would be lots better.
Six volt motors generally run and survive pretty well on twelve volts if the motor is clean and has good lubrication. It will run fast. A step down voltage reducer would be my first step to making the wipers functional. Get the big reducer with a heat sink and mount it somewhere that heat will not be a problem as it will run hot.

Don't have any experience with "step downs"..where do I get one? Are there any better brands etc.
I saw this unit on ebay..and there's a similar one and much less, but without all the cooling fins etc.. the cooling is worthwhile..and its more than I would guess it would cost..but ...looks good.
That is the voltage reducer that I am using on my '49 F4. It has enough amps to run all of the 6V accessories including the heater and radio. I wonder if someone cut the brace out of the dash and installed a '51-'52 electric wiper assembly.

I dunno, but if his wiper is OEM it's vacuum in a 48.
Maybe it is..It was in the truck when I bought it, and I've never messed with it. And its never worked..At least when I turned the **** etc nothing happens.
So its vacuum uh?
I've never taken it out and its difficult for me to see real well..its kinda jammed in against the radio etc..And there's no vacuum line or wires leading to it that I can see. I guess the radio is not OEM either? It's the correct "looking" radio to me, but its not a 48 radio either? Must be a 51-52?
Guess I don't know the OEM status of my truck to well haha.
I'm about the 3rd owner and its been modded before me quite a bit, although its appearance is very factory even with the bias ply tires and 16 inch wheels. But when I got it things like the seat were gone and the front inner fender panels were gone(room for the big collector headers to exit) and various other things missing as well(no camper shell either). And it has a later differential of some sort..so I'm told. And of course the Y block V8. But still has a Ford 4 speed granny non-synchro manual tranny with aftermarket adapter to the Y block(oem tranny?? not?? Idk)
But I figured the wiper motor was electric..Guess not/thanks
So I need what? A factory 51-52 electric wiper motor? or similar. I suppose if I shop the catalogs I'll find one too.
Tom, it's a vacuum motor, very easy to remove. Unscrew the bezel at the base of the windshield and remove the **** assembly from the dash and it should come right out. I found a dual vacuum wiper from a later truck, 51-52 style and converted it to electric. There are kits on the market to do that, speedway sells one among others. I used a jeep wiper motor since I used a jeep steering column and the wiring was easier.

You can install a '51/52 electric wiper in an older truck as long as you're not using a '48-50 stock radio. The wiper motor will be in the area is the radio is using. Same goes if you use the vacuum unit.
Hey Tom,
Here is an after market wiper solution for your ''48 - '50.
Newport engineering makes them - a bit pricey. We did not have a radio
in our dash but we did have to navigate around the cowl & A/C.
I was thinking maybe for the moment I'd just try to get the existing unit to work. I'll look in my books and see if I can find anything on it.
The difference between this 48? unit and the later 51-52 is what? Mine is a single wiper. Is the later model also vacuum but with two wipers? or?
I suppose I just take a vacuum off the carburetor? I can't see the port or etc on the wiper motor, but I probably don't know what I'm looking at. Or I can just take the whole thing out and learn more.
Maybe if I get a mirror plus better light etc. I can see something.
I do have the radio..and I guess its a 48 or thereabouts..looks correct..and I like it..but it doesn't work and I've looked into having it restored/repaired etc. and its just more money than I'm willing to spend. But it looks cool, and I would like to keep it in the dash .
