Quick tstat install question

Just put a new tstat in and I have a question about the new o-ring seal. Does the o-ring go inside the hole that the tstat sits in, or does it go over the nipple on the housing from the upper radiator hose? I couldn't get it to stay on the housing nipple, so I put it inside the hole that the tstat sits in. Seems to seal up fine, no leaks. However I just don't feel that is the correct way...I have a Haynes manual, but it is pretty much worthless. I've always used Chiltons in the past, but they didnt have one in stcock...I'm gonna get one though because Haynes manuals are PATHETIC in comparison to Chiltons.

Thanks for the replies in advance.
