Hi I am putting a 460 out of an 87 f250 in my 81 f250 and the carb on the 460 is a holley and it has all the clif smog stuff on it I was wondering if I can take the smog stuff off and the carb will work fine by what I have found it is a 4180 holley but different for the smog thanks for any help
Providing that the 87 460 has Duraspark II (fender mounted control module, with vacuum advance canister on distributor) and not TFI Ignition, yes. You can remove the emissions stuff and install it in the 81. Otherwise, you'll need to do some changing around there. Your distributor will need a mechanical advance recurve when you desmog it. But, that's cheap and easy. Not sure what they used on an 87 460 for the external exhaust crossover on the back of each head that joins them together. But, you should be able to find a bolt and seal off the thermactor ports that way. Someone who has more experience with 460's can chime in.
Ok, that makes it easy then. Remove all of the emissions stuff, get it running and work out any kinks there may be. Basically. Buy a Mr. gasket 925D spring kit, replace the heavy spring with a light spring and leave the medium spring that's factory there. So you have a light/medium spring combination. Clean the disassembled parts up and reassemble. That's about all there is to that for basics.
here is a good read on how it all works and how to do it. Generally they don't run well after de smogging with the ultra delayed mechanical advance. I know my 351W ran like a retarded slug before I changed springs.
Way to early to talk about let alone change distributor springs.
Yes you can remove a vast majority of the emissions equipment. Much of it is for the catalytic converters anyway, which the 81 doesn't have.
Go ahead and remove both air pumps and everything they connect to via the hoses. Also I suggest dealing with the air injection hoses(the metal tubes on the exhaust manifolds) while the engine is out.
If you can I suggest replacing the intake manifold to get rid of the exhaust ports for the EGR among other things.
If you get rid of the EGR then you'll only need a few vacuum lines. One from the carb to the distributor, if it has a thermo valve on the water neck skip or remove it. Keep it if you keep the EGR working though. Next back of manifold to the brakes, and supply to the HVAC system which should be as stock.
What he said. I do realize it is much too early to talk about changing distributor springs. But, now he knows. I was very fatigued feeling when I wrote that and that's about all that came to mind.
That carb is a smog carb though. Keep your eye out for a aftermarket carb or save your money for one, and it will bolt right on and you won't have all those capped off hose connections sticking out.
If you look on Ebay. Holley is now selling factory remanufactured 4160's for $189 for an electric choke 600 4160 or $199 for a manual choke 600 4160. Just a heads up.
I think some people use a 5/8 thread bolt. I just took the piping and cut it off, welded it shut, and bolted it back on with a gasket.
I cut the ends off the pipe, made a gasket, flipped it around and bolted it back on so it covers the hole. Been working fine ever since! just another way of doing it.
