Exclamation Bullet proof question

as we all know this comes up a lot with the 6.0... im wanting to get the edge juiced with attitude chip cts, for monitoring my truck and will not "use" the chip until i have my truck bullet proofed because i do not want to cause any damage or spend unwanted money... is this possible or am i dreaming?

thanks in advance. any comment welcome, im looking for valuable info for things to do in protecting my truck.

You have the right attitude towards tuning for sure. The 6.0 can easily make more power than it can handle if you are not careful. I would recommend first having a way to monitor fuel pressure and egts at the least. If you haven't done the blue spring update, that's an easy place to start. Next I'd have to say is an exhaust upgrade to help get rid of the high temps there. Some bullet proofing depends on the year of your truck. The rest all depends on budget.

May I ask why you are set on the edge? I understand it may appear a good option because it will do some monitoring and tuning, but in my opinion a proper 6.0 tune would be better. I would recommend something in the SCT line of tuners. Some do monitoring and tuning, others just allow you to program a tune and the monitoring is up to you. Innovative diesel performance and gearhead both offer tunes for studded and non-studded trucks.

I haven't done anything as of right now because I just bought this truck about 4 months ago, but an exhaust was done maybe the right way maybe not, It has I think 2" duals straight out the back with a Y and no mufflers.... Other than that I'm honestly not sure what has been done and what hasn't. I'm planning on taking it to my local diesel shop to have them look it over. This is my first diesel and I'm at the point now where I'm learning what I can about the 6.0 and still very new to it all

I want the edge because the juiced w/att comes with the egt starter and turbo timer which is what I'm also wanting, egt for obvious reasons haha. Overall have heard its a good tuner and for my purpose now until I get it bullet proofed a good monitor.

Why do you say I should go for the sct vs edge?

The SCT is recommended over the Edge because the Edge uses canned tunes. With the SCT, you can get custom tunes for your driving style and what you are wanting out of the truck.

The blue spring update is to raise fuel pressure so your injectors will not become damaged from not getting enough fuel. If fuel pressure drops below 50psi, your injectors are at risk. Basically on the fuel bowl there's a pressure regulator. You take that apart, remove the old spring and install the new spring which is blue in color. The blue spring is an actual ford part which makes the pressure regulator act differently than the other spring and pressure increases. It is recommended to check fuel pressure with a gauge before and after doing this to make sure it is ok. As an example mine normally runs around 65psi and can drop below 50 if you are not careful. With the stock spring your normal pressure will probably be in the 50s so not much room to move there.

The older egr coolers are beefier than the newer ones (2004.5 and up I believe) but the older high pressure oil pumps can have issues. There are some other things with the high pressure oil system, hopefully someone will chime in because I can't remember all the details.

Do some searching around on here there's tons of info and a lot of helpful people.

Just be careful where you go, make sure they have a good reputation for working on the 6.0. I've heard horror stories of 10-15k repairs on these engines.

The "downside" to the canned tune-type programmers is they OFTEN increase the engine power by tricking the PCM into believing the engine power is lower and as a consequence the TRANSMISSION gets destroyed by the extra power that it doesn't realize is present (i.e.: adding more fuel but telling the PCM there is only 60% the fuel being used, telling the PCM that boost is only 75% of what is really is, etc.)

The more expensive "custom" tunes also include trans reprogramming which lets you keep your transmission safe.
