Our 97 explorer won't start when pointed down hill. It will sputter a bit and die right away. When its pointed uphill or on level ground it starts just fine. I am pretty sure this means its the fuel pump going to hell. Anyone have any Ideas/advice? How much of a PITA is it to drop the tank? Any trouble shooting ideas?
I have had the same trouble with my 97 explorer here in Australia, & found it was just low on fuel, maybe 1/8th of a tank, the pick up must be at the back of the tank & won't get fuel if facing downhill.
Does it have to sit for a while before it will not start? In other words...can you park downhill.....turn it off..then it will immediately not start?
I have a '98. If I let it sit with the nose downhill for several hours...it will not start...it has always done this (I got it at 30K). The fuel just slowly leaks out of the pressurized line, I suppose.
But anyway....I've never had any fuel pump problems (have over 100K now)
There is plenty of fuel in the truck. I have been doing some research and think that it is the inertia cut off switch. I am going to pick on up and see what happens.
